Outcome of glioblastoma resection in patients 80 years of age and older

Mahamadou Niare et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the role and complications of tumor resection in patients aged 80 and older with glioblastoma. It found that radical removal of GBM in selected patients in this age group was associated with acceptable survival and low perioperative complication rate, comparable to that of a biopsy. Although the overall median survival was lower than reported for younger patients, a subgroup amenable to radical surgery and Stupp protocol achieved a median survival of 17.5 months.

Predictors of early postoperative epileptic seizures after awake surgery in supratentorial diffuse gliomas

Marc Zanello et al.

Summary: Functional-based resection under awake conditions has a low rate of intraoperative and early postoperative seizures, with good seizure outcomes at 6 months and 2 years postoperatively. Factors like treatment time of at least 3 months postoperatively, frontal lobe involvement, intraoperative current intensity, and supratotal resection are independently associated with early postoperative seizures.

Clinical Pearls and Methods for Intraoperative Awake Language Mapping

Ramin A. Morshed et al.

Summary: Intraoperative language mapping is a well-established technique for avoiding permanent neurological deficits and maximizing extent of resection. However, there is a lack of consistency in how patients are tested and the techniques involved to ensure safety during an awake procedure. This review explores patient selection, neuroanesthetic techniques, language mapping stimulation paradigms, and the impact of electrical stimulation intensity and timing on interpretation of mapping results.

Is function-based resection using intraoperative awake brain mapping feasible and safe for solitary brain metastases within eloquent areas?

Jean-Baptiste Pelletier et al.

Summary: Function-based resection under awake conditions is feasible and safe for solitary brain metastasis patients, with high resection rates in eloquent brain areas while maintaining overall neurological condition. Awake craniotomy should be considered to optimize outcomes in brain metastases in eloquent areas.

Feasibility, Safety and Impact on Overall Survival of Awake Resection for Newly Diagnosed Supratentorial IDH-Wildtype Glioblastomas in Adults

Alessandro Moiraghi et al.

Summary: Awake surgery has been shown to improve resection rates, reduce residual tumor rates, and achieve more supratotal resections compared to asleep surgery, benefiting the overall survival of IDH-wildtype glioblastoma patients.
