Frontal lobe-dominant cerebral blood flow reduction and atrophy can be progressive in Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Madoka Mori-Yoshimura et al.

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the characteristics and progressive changes of brain image abnormalities in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The study found that DMD patients frequently exhibit frontal lobe-dominant cerebral blood flow reduction and atrophy, and may be at risk of progressive cerebral atrophy and reduced cerebral blood flow. The findings suggest that MRI, CT, and/or brain single photon emission CT are useful for detecting brain abnormalities in adult DMD patients.

Tissue- and cell-specific whole-transcriptome meta-analysis from brain and retina reveals differential expression of dystrophin complexes and new dystrophin spliced isoforms

Cesar Garcia-Cruz et al.

Summary: This study provides a first RNA-Seq-based reference showing tissue- and cell-specific differential expression of dystrophins, splice variants, and associated proteins in mouse brain and retina. The study discovers that a cell type may express multiple dystrophin complexes and identifies new splicing events. Additionally, the study reveals that transcripts with stop codons are translated into truncated proteins lacking their C-terminus.

Association between use of systemic and inhaled glucocorticoids and changes in brain volume and white matter microstructure: a cross-sectional study using data from the UK Biobank

Merel van der Meulen et al.

Summary: The study found that both systemic and inhaled glucocorticoid use are associated with decreased white matter integrity and some changes in grey matter volume, potentially contributing to the neuropsychiatric side effects of glucocorticoid medication.

Longitudinal data of neuropsychological profile in a cohort of Duchenne muscular dystrophy boys without cognitive impairment

R. Battini et al.

Summary: The study re-assessed the neuropsychological profile in a group of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy without intellectual disability and neuropsychiatric disorder three years apart from a previous evaluation, revealing a typical neuropsychological profile and supporting the involvement of a cerebellar striatal cortical network. Additionally, more detailed genotype-neuropsychological phenotype correlations were found, indicating a more general neuropsychological impairment in boys without Dp140 expression.
