Bayesian brain in tinnitus: Computational modeling of three perceptual phenomena using a modified Hierarchical Gaussian Filter

Suyi Hu et al.

Summary: This study developed a generative computational tinnitus perception model based on the Bayesian brain concept, successfully replicating behavioral responses during residual inhibition and simulating residual excitation and occurrence of tinnitus in non-tinnitus subjects after sensory deprivation. The model has the potential to quantitatively link experimental observations to theoretical hypotheses and support the search for neural signatures of tinnitus.

Hyperacusis in tinnitus patients relates to enlarged subcortical and cortical responses to sound except at the tinnitus frequency

E. A. Koops et al.

Summary: Individuals with hyperacusis showed increased subcortical and cortical activity in response to sound, while the response to tinnitus frequency was reduced. This suggests that hyperacusis may be associated with an increase in neural gain along the auditory pathway, and differences in attentional resources allocated to the tinnitus sound.

Predicting neuronal response properties from hemodynamic responses in the auditory cortex

Isma Zulfiqar et al.

Summary: Recent fMRI studies have shown differences in responses to natural sounds along the rostral-caudal axis of the human superior temporal gyrus. A forward model combining neuronal and hemodynamic BOLD response modeling was used to link neuronal response properties with fMRI data, revealing complementary neural information processing along this axis.
