Recent advances and current trends in brain-computer interface research and their applications

Martina Zabcikova et al.

Summary: Brain-computer interface (BCI) enables direct communication between the brain and external devices, and has become a popular field of research in recent years. BCI systems have diverse applications in medicine, communication and control, entertainment, and other areas, showing great potential for real-world implementation. This review analyzed the top 100 most cited BCI articles from the past four years, examining different application areas, recording methods, signal acquisition types, and countries of origin, providing an overview of the current trends and advances in BCI research.

Towards a universal and privacy preserving EEG-based authentication system

Amir Jalaly Bidgoly et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an EEG-based authentication method that captures the fingerprint of users' EEG signals using deep learning methods. The method can verify claimed identities by comparing genuine EEG fingerprints with new EEG samples, even for users not observed during training. It preserves privacy by storing fingerprints instead of raw EEG signals, and improves ease of use through the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process.

Deep-Learning-Based Automatic Selection of Fewest Channels for Brain-Machine Interfaces

Hyun-Seok Kim et al.

Summary: This study proposes a deep-learning approach to automatically search for the minimum number of channels applicable to general BMI paradigms. The optimized minimal EEG-channel sets selected in all three cognitive task paradigms have statistically equivalent (or even higher) decoding accuracies compared with using all channels. The brain areas of the selected channel set are neurophysiologically interpretable, showing the potential for portability of the minimal EEG channel set.

Person Authentication Using Brain Waves Evoked by Individual-related and Imperceptible Visual Stimuli

Md Atikur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study introduces individual-related stimulus to improve the verification performance based on biometric authentication. By using individual face image stimulation, higher evoked response was achieved. By using various time zones, the performance of eight subjects was verified with an equal error rate of 6.2%.

Brain Waves and Evoked Potentials as Biometric User Identification Strategy: An Affordable Low-cost Approach

Roberto Saia et al.

Summary: The introduction of low-cost devices capable of performing EEG on the market has created a new research opportunity for many previously excluded researchers. A particularly interesting field of research is the use of these devices in biometric systems, where EEG data is used for user identification purposes. This work aims to formalize a biometric identification system based on low-cost EEG devices and simple stimulation instruments, such as computer-generated images and sounds, to improve reliability and stability over time.

Hirotomo Nakashima et al.

Summary: In this study, a method of using evoked EEG caused by imperceptible vibration stimuli for personal verification was introduced, with the approach of repeating stimulus presentation over a short period of time and incorporating support vector machine (SVM) to enhance verification performance. Evaluation of the verification performance resulted in an equal error rate of 11%.

Yoshiaki Shindo et al.

Summary: This paper explores the use of EEGs evoked by imperceptible vibration stimulation to identify individuals, suggesting measuring evoked EEGs for 100 ms and confirming the presence of event-related responses. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed stimulus presentation method over the conventional method.
