Orbital-resolved visualization of single-molecule photocurrent channels

Miyabi Imai-Imada et al.

Summary: This study combines a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) with localized plasmon fields driven by a tunable laser to directly visualize the photocurrent channels through the molecular orbitals of a single molecule at atomic-scale resolution. The direction and spatial distribution of the photocurrent were found to be sensitive to the bias voltage, and counter-flowing photocurrent channels were detected even at a voltage where the averaged photocurrent is close to zero. The competition between photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and photoluminescence was also observed, and the relaxation pathway of the excited molecule could be controlled by positioning the STM tip with three-dimensional, atomic precision.

Complete deciphering of the dynamic stereostructures of a single aggregation-induced emission molecule

Caiyao Yang et al.

Summary: The realization of functional molecular devices relies on a deep understanding of the structure-property relationship of molecules. However, due to limited detection sensitivity and temporal resolution of current methods, there are few reports on real-time probing of dynamic changes in molecular stereostructures at the single-molecule level. In this study, we present a thorough investigation of the dynamic stereostructures of a single aggregation-induced emission molecule using molecular junctions. The results provide new insights into the development of ultra-sensitive devices and suggest that further integration with optical measurements can enable synchronous monitoring of single-molecule photochemistry and photophysics.

Highly nonlinear transport across single-molecule junctions via destructive quantum interference

Julia E. Greenwald et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully created a molecular system where the constructive quantum interference between certain molecular orbitals is suppressed, while the destructive interference between other molecular orbitals is enhanced, leading to highly nonlinear single-molecule circuits. They demonstrated the effectiveness of this strategy using fluorene oligomers containing a central benzothiadiazole unit, achieving a reproducible modulation of the conductance of a 6-nm molecule by more than 10,000 at room temperature.

Atomically Precise Engineering of Single-Molecule Stereoelectronic Effect

Linan Meng et al.

Summary: Charge transport in a single-molecule junction is highly sensitive to both the internal electronic structure of a molecule and its microscopic environment. The introduction of an azobenzene side-group at the central ring delicately modulates charge transport in the backbone via a single-molecule stereoelectronic effect. This tunability offers a new route to precisely engineer multiconfigurational single-molecule memories, switches, and sensors.
