Intercell moire exciton complexes in electron lattices

Xi Wang et al.

Summary: The authors report the emergence of intercell moire exciton complexes in H-stacked WS2/WSe2 heterobilayers, where the exciton's hole from the WSe2 layer is surrounded by its bound electron's wavefunction distributed among three adjacent moire traps in the WS2 layer exhibiting an out-of-plane dipole and in-plane quadrupole. This work provides insights into and possibilities for engineering emergent exciton many-body states in correlated moire charge orders.

Structure of the moire exciton captured by imaging its electron and hole

Ouri Karni et al.

Summary: Interlayer excitons, electron-hole pairs bound across atomically thin layered semiconductors, have attracted attention for quantum information applications. In this study, images of the time-resolved and momentum-resolved distribution of both particles were captured in a WSe2/MoS2 heterostructure, providing direct measurements of the interlayer exciton diameter and its localization. The results show that interlayer excitons can be highly localized within small moire unit cells.

Sandhya Susarla et al.

Summary: This study investigates the localization of the lowest-energy intralayer exciton in a rotationally aligned WS2-WSe2 moire superlattice using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The results show that the exciton center-of-mass wave function is confined to a radius of approximately 2 nanometers. These findings provide important insights into the formation mechanism of moire superlattices and the engineering of strain at the nanoscale.

Intralayer charge-transfer moire excitons in van der Waals superlattices

Mit H. Naik et al.

Summary: The nature of exciton resonances in WSe2/WS2 moire superlattices is identified using large-scale first-principles GW and Bethe-Salpeter calculations, along with micro-reflection spectroscopy. A rich set of moire excitons, including modulated Wannier excitons and previously unidentified intralayer charge-transfer excitons, is discovered, indicating highly non-trivial exciton states that can emerge in transition metal dichalcogenide moire superlattices.

Moire-Bose-Hubbard model for interlayer excitons in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures

Niclas Goetting et al.

Summary: In bilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, the twist angle between layers can introduce a periodic potential modulation, leading to correlated states of excitons. The transition between Mott and extended exciton phases is explored using a moire-Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, with parameters obtained from Wannier representation and a nonlocal Rytova-Keldysh model for dielectric screening. The predicted emergence of Mott-insulating states in this system suggests the potential of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures as quantum simulators.

Moire trions in MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayers

Xi Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers observed moire trions and their doping-dependent photoluminescence polarization in H-stacked MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayers. As moire traps are filled with either electrons or holes, new sets of interlayer exciton photoluminescence peaks emerge with specific narrow linewidths. Circularly polarized photoluminescence reveals a switching polarization pattern as moire excitons transition from negatively charged to positively charged, driven by energy relaxation pathways during interlayer trion formation.
