The role of alkali metal cations and platinum-surface hydroxyl in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Aamir Hassan Shah et al.

Summary: The kinetics of platinum-catalysed hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolyte is poor, mainly due to the complexity of the platinum-water interface caused by the presence of alkali metal cations. The alkali metal cations have different effects on the destabilization of hydroxyl adsorbate species, which in turn affects the HER kinetics.

H2 In Situ Inducing Strategy on Pt Surface Segregation Over Low Pt Doped PtNi5 Nanoalloy with Superhigh Alkaline HER Activity

Cong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new strategy to enhance the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction activity of bimetallic PtxNiy nanoalloys by inducing Pt surface segregation with the small gas molecule of H-2. The PtNi5-0.3 sample shows superior electrocatalytic performance with significantly low overpotential and steep Tafel slope compared to previously reported PtxNiy catalysts.

Mastering the surface strain of platinum catalysts for efficient electrocatalysis

Tianou He et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that by depositing ultrathin Pt shells on palladium-based nanocubes, strain in the Pt(100) lattice can be induced and adjusted, leading to tunable electrocatalytic activity for specific reactions. By controlling the lattice strain, the researchers were able to optimize the performance of Pt catalysts for a wide range of reactions, showing different strain-activity correlations for different reactions.

Cobalt single atom site isolated Pt nanoparticles for efficient ORR and HER in acid media

Lvhan Liang et al.

Summary: By utilizing the isolating effect of cobalt single atoms on platinum, strong interaction between cobalt single atoms and platinum, and the confinement of the metal organic framework-derived porous carbon matrix, platinum nanoparticles were successfully evenly immobilized on a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix with rich cobalt single atoms as multiple active sites. This not only increased the active centers, but also promoted catalysis kinetics, significantly improving catalytic activity for oxygen reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions.

Microstrain Engineered NixS2/PtNi Porous Nanowires for Boosting Hydrogen Evolution Activity

Guanghua Wang et al.

Summary: The study successfully prepared one-dimensional porous nanowires with tailored NixS2/PtNi heterostructures through microstrain engineering, displaying superb HER electrocatalytic activity. The NiS2/PtNi catalyst showed significantly lower overpotentials for HER in both alkaline and acid media compared to a state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. The engineered heterostructures with tailored electronic structure and abundant microstrains serve as active sites for HER, contributing to the boosted performance.

In Situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy of PtNi-Nanowire/Vulcan XC-72R under Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Alkaline Media

Joesene Soto-Perez et al.

Summary: Studying the ORR in alkaline electrolytes with PtNi-NWs catalysts has shown promising catalytic responses. PtNi-NWs/V exhibited the highest specific activity and half-wave potential, suggesting their potential as active catalysts for ORR. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy results indicated alloy formation between Pt and Ni in PtNi-NWs catalysts, providing insights into their catalytic performance in alkaline electrolytes.
