Primordial Helium-3 Exchange Between Earth's Core and Mantle

Peter L. Olson et al.

Summary: Volatile substances from the solar nebula can be found in Earth's deep mantle, and there is a possibility that the core also contains volatile substances from the solar nebula, although the amount is unknown. In this study, calculations of volatile ingassing and degassing are used to estimate the abundance of primordial He-3 in the core and to track the rate of He-3 exchange between the core and mantle throughout Earth's history.

Partitioning of noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) during Earth's core segregation: A possible core reservoir for primordial noble gases

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the partition coefficients of noble gases between liquid iron and molten silicates, and suggests that Earth's core may have preserved significant amounts of noble gases. The partition coefficients are mainly influenced by temperature, with an increase at higher temperatures. The results provide insights into the formation and evolution of the Earth's core.

Deep fractionation of Hf in a solidifying magma ocean and its implications for tungsten isotopic heterogeneities in the mantle

Jie Deng et al.

Summary: Recent geochemical studies have shown a wide range of W-182 anomalies in mantle-derived rocks, the origin of which is still unknown. Through simulated conditions of Earth's lower mantle, it was found that Hf undergoes fractionation during crystallization, producing enriched crystals in W-182 and depleted liquid. The observed variability of W-182/W-184 in terrestrial samples may be attributed to the solidification of a basal magma ocean.
