Synthetic biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs): Recent advances and future challenges

Andrea H. Westlie et al.

Summary: This article reviews the advances in synthesizing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a class of biodegradable polyesters, over the past five decades. It focuses on the recent efforts to address key challenges in biosynthesis by utilizing precision in synthesis, tunability in polymer structures, and scalability in polymer production offered by chemical catalysis. The article also discusses expanding the scope of PHAs and developing functionalized and uncommon PHAs through synthetic methods. It concludes with the remaining challenges and future directions in the field.

Superior thermal stability and fast crystallization behavior of a novel, biodegradable α-methylated bacterial polyester

Sho Furutate et al.

Summary: A new biodegradable plastic, P(3H2MB), has been synthesized and characterized with higher melting temperature and improved thermal resistance compared to currently available biodegradable plastics. It exhibits mechanical flexibility and crystallization behavior similar to petroleum-based plastics, potentially opening new avenues for high-performance biodegradable plastics to replace petroleum-based bulk commodity plastics.

Roles of Conformational Flexibility in the Crystallization of Stereoirregular Polymers

Navin Kafle et al.

Summary: Stereoregularity significantly affects the crystallization, mechanical, and thermal properties of polymers. Research shows that atactic hPNB exhibits higher crystallinity and longer period compared to isotactic and syndiotactic hPNB. Furthermore, differences in molecular dynamics among the different stereochemistries lead to unique crystal-crystal transitions in hPNB.

Thermal properties of poly(3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate-co-3-hydroxybutyrate) copolymers with narrow comonomer-unit compositional distributions

Sho Furutate et al.

Summary: Novel PHA copolymers of (2R, 3R)-3-hydroxy-2-methylbutyrate (3H2MB) and (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) were biosynthesized with different comonomer compositions, leading to copolymers with narrow compositional distributions, faster crystallization behavior, and closer melting temperatures to 3HB homopolymer. The copolymerization of 3H2MB and 3HB is valuable for designing new PHA materials with desirable properties.
