Role of the Environment in Quenching the Production of H3+ from Dicationic Clusters of Methanol

Enliang Wang et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies on the fragmentation of dicationic methanol monomers and clusters ionized by low-energy electrons show the formation process of H-3(+) involves the intermediate neutral H-2 and takes place within 100-500 fs, with excellent agreement between calculated kinetic energy release and experimental results. Dicationic clusters of organic molecules exhibit quenching of H-3(+) formation due to the possibility of distributing charges onto different molecules, leading to fast dissociation channels.

Anomalous formation of trihydrogen cations from water on nanoparticles

M. Said Alghabra et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the formation of H3+ from water adsorbed on silica nanoparticles exposed to intense laser pulses, without the presence of any organic molecules. This finding provides insights into the formation and evolution of H3+ in interstellar chemistry, showcasing non-traditional routes for creating exotic molecular entities.
