Modeling and Optimizing the Impact of Process and Equipment Parameters in Sputtering Deposition Systems Using a Gaussian Process Machine Learning Framework

Christopher I. Lang et al.

Summary: We propose a method for empirically modeling and optimizing variations in sputtering deposition processes using Gaussian Process (GP) machine learning methods. Our models can be trained with limited data to enable fast tuning of sputtering processes. We demonstrate two cases: modeling the effect of process recipe parameters and equipment configuration parameters on sputtered film thickness uniformity. Incorporating prior process knowledge into the GP framework, we show that our predictive models converge in fewer iterations compared to other modeling methods.

Active learning-guided exploration of parameter space of air plasmas to enhance the energy efficiency of NO x production

Ketong Shao et al.

Summary: This paper presents an active learning approach using Bayesian optimization to explore the multivariable and nonlinear parameter space of low temperature plasmas. Experimental results show that, given a fixed experimental budget, the active learning approach outperforms random search in terms of maximizing the rate of NO x generation or minimizing the energy cost.

Benchmarking the performance of Bayesian optimization across multiple experimental materials science domains

Qiaohao Liang et al.

Summary: Bayesian optimization (BO) has shown effectiveness in guiding autonomous and high-throughput experiments in materials science. This study evaluated the efficiency of BO across five different experimental materials systems, finding that Gaussian Process (GP) with anisotropic kernels and Random Forest (RF) performed well in BO, outperforming commonly used GP with isotropic kernels. GP with anisotropic kernels demonstrated robustness, while RF is a close alternative with advantages such as lack of distribution assumptions, lower time complexity, and easier initial hyperparameter selection. The benefits of using GP with anisotropic kernels in future materials optimization campaigns were also highlighted.
