Floquet-Landau-Zener interferometry: Usefulness of the Floquet theory in pulse-laser-driven systems

Tatsuhiko N. Ikeda et al.

Summary: This study develops the Landau-Zener transfer matrix theory for the instantaneous Floquet states (IFSs) of quantum systems driven by a strong pulse laser, showing unexpectedly good quantitative agreement in two-level quantum systems. The approach allows for a qualitative understanding of the probability's peculiar behaviors as quantum path interference between IFSs, and remains useful for shorter pulses down to two-cycle ones in the present model.

Theory of subcycle time-resolved photoemission: Application to terahertz photodressing in graphene

Michael Schuler et al.

Summary: Motivated by recent experimental progress, we revisit the theory of pump-probe time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES), which is one of the most powerful techniques to trace transient pump-driven modifications of the electronic properties. We introduce the theory of time-resolved photoemission within both gauges from the perspective of nonequilibrium Green's functions, we investigate the gauge invariance, and discuss typical effects observed in subcycle time-resolved photoemission. The formalism presented is an ideal starting point for realistic trARPES simulations including scattering effects.

Colloquium: Nonthermal pathways to ultrafast control in quantum materials

Alberto de la Torre et al.

Summary: Recent progress in utilizing ultrafast light-matter interaction to control the macroscopic properties of quantum materials is reviewed, focusing on photoinduced phenomena that are nonthermal in nature. These phenomena involve transient modifications to the free energy landscape, redistribution of quasiparticle populations, modification of coupling strengths, resonant driving of the crystal lattice, and coherent dressing of a material's quantum states by the light field. Discussing recently discovered effects leveraging these mechanisms and presenting a road map for utilizing nonthermal pathways to create new functionalities.

Real-Space Observation of Magnon Interaction with Driven Space-Time Crystals

Nick Traeger et al.

Summary: The concept of space-time crystals (STC) was successfully transferred to magnons and experimentally demonstrated at room temperature. The driven SIC was achieved by strong microwave pumping of a permalloy (Py) stripe, and the interaction between magnons and STC led to the formation of a magnonic band structure. The experimental results showed ultrashort spin waves generation and lattice scattering due to this interaction, which can't be described by classical dispersion relations for linear spin wave excitation.

Tunable non-integer high-harmonic generation in a topological insulator

C. P. Schmid et al.

Summary: This study experimentally demonstrates high-order harmonic generation in a three-dimensional topological insulator, bismuth telluride. By using a specific frequency of the driving field, the generation of high-order harmonics from the bulk and topological surface was successfully differentiated, revealing unconventional HH generation processes.

Gauge invariance of light-matter interactions in first-principle tight-binding models

Michael Schueler et al.

Summary: The study focused on introducing light-matter interaction in first-principle tight-binding models, comparing the accuracy and gauge invariance of velocity gauge and dipole gauge. The dipole gauge provided a more accurate description in all cases, highlighting the imperfect cancellation of paramagnetic and diamagnetic current as the main deficiency of the velocity gauge.
