Microfluidics unveil nucleation and growth in the radiolytic synthesis of colloidal silver and allow X-ray detection with nanoclusters

Luiz H. S. Nunes et al.

Summary: We developed a two-stage microfluidic reactor to synthesize colloidal silver and improve the sensitivity of radiation dosimeters. The microfluidic approach allowed for better control of size distribution and reduced detectable dose. We were able to detect doses as low as 0.2 Gy with higher sensitivities than previously reported. The presence of Ag nanoclusters was observed at doses from 0 to 0.75 Gy, suggesting nucleation predominates in the microreaction stage and in the radiolytic step for doses below 1 Gy.

Microfluidic Synthesis of Theranostic Nanoparticles with Near-Infrared Scintillation: Toward Next-Generation Dosimetry in X-ray-Induced Photodynamic Therapy

Mileni Isikawa et al.

Summary: A microfluidic synthesis was developed to grow GdF3:Eu theranostic scintillating nanoparticles for monitoring X-ray doses and treatments with X-PDT. Nanoparticles conjugated with methylene blue showed enhanced singlet oxygen generation under X-ray irradiation, leading to complete cell death in cytotoxicity assays. The scintillating properties of the nanoparticles allowed for monitoring in vivo dosimetry during radiotherapy treatments, showing promising potential for real-time dose monitoring during cancer therapy.

An evaluation of solid state detectors for the relative dosimetry of kilovoltage X-ray beams

John Daniel et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a range of solid state detectors in kV dosimetry. The results showed that diode detectors are a suitable replacement for ionization chambers for low energy kV beams (60-150 kVp), but are not suitable for high energy kV beams. Additionally, all solid state detectors overresponded in ROF measurements.

Study of Ag Nanoparticles in a Polyacrylamide Hydrogel Dosimeters by Optical Technique

Yasser S. Soliman et al.

Summary: The dosimetric characteristics of hydrogel dosimeters based on polyacrylamide (PAC) incorporating silver nitrate as a radiation-sensitive material were investigated. PAC hydrogel showed a linearly increasing Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) band upon exposure to gamma-ray, indicating its high radiation sensitivity. The PAC hydrogel dosimeter retained higher radiation sensitivity at doses below 15 Gy. This hydrogel could be considered as a dosimeter material for verifying radiotherapy techniques and dose monitoring during blood irradiation.

Visible colorimetric dosimetry of UV and ionizing radiations by a dual-module photochromic nanocluster

Huangjie Lu et al.

Summary: This study presents a dual-mode photochromic thorium-based metal-organic nanocluster for direct visible colorimetric dosimetry of UV, beta-ray, and gamma-ray radiation, allowing for quantification of ionizing radiations over a broad range. The material integrates dual-module photochromism and enables on-site detection of radiation dose changes through visible color transitions.

Dosimetric investigations on radiation-induced Ag nanoparticles in a gel dosimeter

Soad M. Tadros et al.

Summary: The study found that the radiation sensitivity of the gel increases with higher concentrations of Ag+ and isopropanol, while decreases with boosting gelatin content and H+ ions. The gel exhibits good water equivalency in energies ranging from 0.3 to 20 MeV and is potentially suitable for doses between 5-100 Gy.
