Intensifying Upconverted Ultraviolet Emission towards Efficient Reactive Oxygen Species Generation

Haoran Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel excitation energy lock-in approach to enhance ultraviolet upconversion emission in nanoparticles. The results show that confining the excitation energy within the core domain and using an optically inert interlayer can significantly boost multiphoton ultraviolet emission. Moreover, the study demonstrates improved photocatalytic reactivity and reactive oxygen species production in ZnO-coated upconversion nanocomposites under 808-nm excitation.

Super-resolution microscopy enabled by high-efficiency surface-migration emission depletion

Rui Pu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates high-efficiency emission depletion through surface migration using the effects of surface quenching and energy migration in nanocrystals. The researchers achieved super-resolution microscopy with low saturation intensities and sub-20 nm lateral resolution by utilizing this mechanism. The approach overcomes the limitations of high-intensity STED microscopy and offers autofluorescence-free, re-excitation-background-free imaging at significantly lower saturation intensities than conventional fluorophores.

Size-Dependent Photon Avalanching in Tm3+ Doped LiYF4 Nano, Micro, and Bulk Crystals

Magdalena Dudek et al.

Summary: Photon avalanche is a highly nonlinear mode of upconversion that can increase luminescence intensity with minute increments of pumping power. The characteristics of photon avalanche, such as nonlinearity and intensity, are found to depend on the material volume and surface quenching. Theoretical simulations provide insights into the physical processes that influence photon avalanche performance. Moreover, photon avalanche single beam super-resolution imaging has been achieved for the first time.

Optical properties of GeO[SiO] and GeO[SiO2] solid alloy layers grown at low temperature

S. G. Cherkova et al.

Summary: The optical properties of GeO[SiO] and GeO[SiO2] solid alloy films grown on Si(001) substrates were investigated, revealing that furnace annealing increases the photoluminescence (PL) signal and causes a redshift of the PL maximum. The temperature dependence of the PL showed anomalous quenching that could not be explained by the classical Arrhenius law. Instead, a Berthelot model provided a good explanation for the intensity of the PL signal.

PEG-Neridronate-Modified NaYF4:Gd3+,Yb3+,Tm3+/NaGdF4 Core-Shell Upconverting Nanoparticles for Bimodal Magnetic Resonance/Optical Luminescence Imaging

Uliana Kostiv et al.

Summary: Upconverting nanoparticles with gadolinium enrichment were synthesized and characterized for bimodal imaging purposes. A 2.5 nm NaGdF4 shell grown on the core nanoparticles led to a 26-fold enhancement in emission under excitation, impacting both T-1 and T-2 relaxation times. PEG-Ner modification significantly increased the relaxivities of the nanoparticles, demonstrating their potential as a diagnostic tool for magnetic resonance imaging.
