Electrochemical and electronic detection of biomarkers in serum: a systematic comparison using aptamer-functionalized surfaces

Vladyslav Mishyn et al.

Summary: The study investigates electric and electrochemical point-of-care sensors for the detection of cTnI in serum samples using aptamer-functionalized CVD graphene-coated interdigated gold electrodes. Both sensors have comparable analytical performances with different equilibrium dissociation constant (K-D) values, indicating the advantage of label-free electric readout over electrochemical sensor when detecting cTnI in serum samples.

Chemical Modifications for a Next Generation of Nucleic Acid Aptamers

Kwing Yeung Chan et al.

Summary: In the past three decades, in vitro systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) has been used to select many aptamers for translational applications. However, the low success rate of SELEX has hindered the further development of aptamers, with one major obstacle being the lack of chemical diversity in nucleic acids. To overcome this, exotic chemical groups have been introduced to expand the chemical repertoire of aptamers.

Highly performing graphene-based field effect transistor for the differentiation between mild-moderate-severe myocardial injury

Teresa Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases result in millions of deaths globally, and early identification and prevention can significantly reduce the mortality rate. This study demonstrates the exceptional properties of an aptamer modified graphene-based FET for specific sensing of cardiac troponin I in different bodily fluids. The sensor allows real-time detection of cardiac troponin I within the clinically important range, enabling differentiation between individuals with different risks for myocardial infarction. The results show promise for the development of a point-of-care device for troponin I sensing in clinical settings.

Origins of Leakage Currents on Electrolyte-Gated Graphene Field-Effect Transistors

Anastasia Svetlova et al.

Summary: Graphene field-effect transistors are commonly used in biosensor development, but questions remain about gate/leakage currents in electrolyte-gated configurations. Gate currents in graphene can be capacitive or Faradic, depending on doping by holes or electrons. Faradic currents are related to oxygen reduction in solution and increase with measurement cycles, indicating enhanced electroactivity towards electron transfer.
