The Scholl Reaction as a Powerful Tool for Synthesis of Curved Polycyclic Aromatics

Yiqun Zhang et al.

Summary: The past decade has witnessed remarkable success in the synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics through Scholl reactions. These curved polycyclic aromatics are unique objects in structural organic chemistry and play an important role in the precise synthesis of nanocarbons with unique topology. They have received considerable attention in supramolecular chemistry and organic functional materials due to their interesting properties and promising applications. However, the understanding of the reaction mechanism and possible rearrangement processes is still limited, making it difficult to predict the outcome of a newly designed substrate in the Scholl reaction.
