Abundance of cavity-free polaritonic states in resonant materials and nanostructures

Adriana Canales et al.

Summary: This study highlights the possibility of self-coupling optical modes sustained by materials themselves to their own electronic or vibrational resonances, without the need for an external cavity. By tracing the roots of the corresponding dispersion relations in the complex frequency plane, it is shown that electronic and vibrational polaritons are natural eigenstates of resonant materials that require no external cavity.

Real-space observation of vibrational strong coupling between propagating phonon polaritons and organic molecules

Andrei Bylinkin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates vibrational strong coupling between propagating phonon polaritons in thin van der Waals crystals and molecular vibrations in adjacent thin molecular layers through nanoimaging. Near-field polariton interferometry shows the formation of a propagating hybrid mode with a pronounced anti-crossing region, exhibiting propagation with negative group velocity. Numerical calculations predict vibrational strong coupling in nanometre-thin molecular layers and phonon polaritons in few-layer van der Waals materials, making propagating phonon polaritons a promising platform for ultrasensitive on-chip spectroscopy and strong-coupling experiments.

Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction in 10B Monoisotopic Boron Nitride Infrared Nanoresonators

Marta Autore et al.

Summary: Phonon-polaritons, emerging as a powerful platform for nanophotonic applications, can concentrate light into extreme sub-wavelength scales and have longer phonon lifetimes compared to plasmonic counterparts. By using monoisotopic B-10 hexagonal boron nitride, nanoresonators with increased quality factors are obtained, allowing for the sensing of nanometric-thick films of molecules. Additionally, strong coupling between molecular vibrations and phonon-polariton resonance can be achieved even in monoisotopic h-BN ribbons.

Guided Mid-IR and Near-IR Light within a Hybrid Hyperbolic-Material/Silicon Waveguide Heterostructure

Mingze He et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/silicon hybrid waveguide can enable dual-band operation at both mid-infrared and telecom frequencies without the need for deleterious etching. Integrating hyperbolic media with silicon photonics enables frequency multiplexing in on-chip photonic systems.

Microcavity phonon polaritons from the weak to the ultrastrong phonon-photon coupling regime

Maria Barra-Burillo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the evolution of weak to ultrastrong coupling between microcavity modes and optical phonons by embedding layers of hexagonal boron nitride. It is found that strong coupling can be achieved even with thin layers as thin as 10 nm, and ultrastrong coupling in fully filled cavities yields a polariton dispersion matching that of phonon polaritons in bulk hBN. This suggests that tunable cavity phonon polaritons could provide a versatile platform for studying the modification of properties of polar crystals by the coupling strength between photons and phonons.

Cavity-Free Ultrastrong Light-Matter Coupling

Philip A. Thomas et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that external structures are unnecessary for achieving room-temperature ultrastrong light-matter coupling. This discovery could aid in the design of experiments to probe polaritonic chemistry and suggests that polaritonic states may be easier to realize than previously thought.

Strong Coupling in a Self-Coupled Terahertz Photonic Crystal

Maria Kaeek et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a new concept of vibrational strong coupling, showing that a monolithic photonic crystal made of a resonant material can exhibit strong coupling between optical modes and vibrational excitations. Experimental and numerical methods were used to characterize the dispersion of photonic modes for different sample thicknesses and reveal their coupling with vibrational resonances. Time-domain THz measurements successfully isolated signals from grating modes and vibro-polaritons.
