Nonlinear electrohydrodynamic ion transport in graphene nanopores

Xiaowei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study reports on pressure-modulated ion conduction in graphene nanopores featuring nonlinear electrohydrodynamic coupling. Experimental observations show an increase in ion conduction induced by pressure, which was not predicted by the classical linear coupling model. Computational and theoretical studies reveal that this pressure sensitivity arises from the transport of capacitively accumulated ions near the graphene surface.

Ionophobicity of carbon sub-nanometer pores enables efficient desalination at high salinity

Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we combine experimental work with molecular dynamics simulation to reveal the ability of sub-nanometer pores to effectively desalinate aqueous media at high molar strength without the need for ion-exchange membranes. The desalination capacity reaches 12 mg/g at 600 mM concentration, with a charge efficiency of 94% and high cycling stability over 200 cycles.

Modeling of emergent memory and voltage spiking in ionic transport through angstrom-scale slits

Paul Robin et al.

Summary: Recent advances in nanofluidics have allowed for the confinement of water to a single molecular layer, showing potential for bioinspired functionalities through molecular control of ion transport. However, the understanding of ion dynamics in these systems is still limited. Research has shown that significant nonlinear effects in ion transport across quasi-two-dimensional slits can lead to the memristor effect, which may be used to build elementary neurons.

Two-dimensional monolayer salt nanostructures can spontaneously aggregate rather than dissolve in dilute aqueous solutions

Wenhui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reports the computational evidence of the spontaneous formation of two-dimensional alkali chloride crystalline/non-crystalline nanostructures in dilute aqueous solution under nanoscale confinement. The unique salt nucleation behavior is attributed to the nanoscale confinement and strongly compressed hydration shells of ions, leading to interesting physicochemical properties of aqueous solutions under nanoscale confinement.

Electroneutrality breakdown in nanopore arrays

J. Pedro de Souza et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the principles of electroneutrality breakdown for electrolytes in one-dimensional confinement through a series of continuum simulations, highlighting the relevance of electroneutrality breakdown in nanoporous membranes for selective ion transport and separations. Various factors such as dielectric mismatch, pore aspect ratio, and confinement dimensionality are independently studied to understand how interacting pores in a membrane can counteract the phenomenon of electroneutrality breakdown and eventually return to electroneutrality.
