The study highlighted the effects of seasonality and host on fungal community assemblage, with implications for the risk of new insect-fungus associations in the invaded habitat.

Geosmithia associated with hardwood-infesting bark and ambrosia beetles, with the description of three new species from Poland

Summary: This study investigated Geosmithia species associated with 18 bark and ambrosia beetle species in hardwood ecosystems in Poland. Through various identification methods, a total of 11 Geosmithia species were identified, including two new species. The biosynthesis pathway of grammicin overlaps with that of patulin, with toluquinol showing high nematocidal activity similar to grammicin. Toluquinol can be a potential lead molecule for new synthetic nematicides in controlling root-knot nematode diseases.

Summary: Thousand cankers disease is caused by the walnut twig beetle vectoring the fungal canker pathogen Geosmithia morbida, resulting in severe dieback and eventual death to walnut and wingnut species. Black walnut, particularly J. nigra, is highly susceptible to this disease, but genetic variation in resistance to G. morbida has been identified in black walnut populations. This study suggests that some black walnut trees have genetic resistance to G. morbida, providing hope for future breeding programs aiming to develop resistance to Thousand cankers disease.
