Galaxy Zoo DECaLS: Detailed visual morphology measurements from volunteers and deep learning for 314 000 galaxies

Mike Walmsley et al.

Summary: This study introduces Galaxy Zoo DECaLS, which provides detailed visual morphological classifications for galaxies within the SDSS DR8 footprint. Using deeper DECaLS images, volunteers were able to identify additional features such as spiral arms, weak bars, and tidal features that were previously unseen in SDSS imaging. The classifications from the volunteers were used to train Bayesian convolutional neural networks, resulting in accurate predictions of detailed morphology for all 314,000 galaxies.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Summary of the contents and survey properties

A. G. A. Brown et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

Entropy: From Thermodynamics to Information Processing

Jordao Natal et al.

Summary: Entropy is a concept that emerged in the 19th century, associated with heat harnessed by thermal machines during the Industrial Revolution. The 20th century saw a scientific revolution due to the innovation of information theory, which includes the concept of entropy. Misconceptions exist regarding the concept of entropy in different fields, as attempts have been made to reconcile the entropy of thermodynamics with that of information theory.

Radio Galaxy Classification: #Tags, Not Boxes

Lawrence Rudnick

Summary: After decades of studying radio galaxies, the complexity of their structures and the multitude of classification methods have led to conflicting terminology and historical schemes. The proposal to use a flexible #tag system for classification, based on discussions with numerous radio astronomers, aims to simplify and adapt to evolving ideas within the community.

The Evolutionary Map of the Universe pilot survey

Ray P. Norris et al.

Summary: The EMU Pilot Survey conducted with the ASKAP telescope covers 270 deg(2) of an area previously surveyed by the Dark Energy Survey, revealing around 220,000 sources with approximately 180,000 being single-component sources. This survey explores a new region of parameter space and has a high sensitivity to low surface brightness emission, leading to the detection of previously rare or absent types of sources.

Unexpected circular radio objects at high Galactic latitude

Ray P. Norris et al.

Summary: A class of circular radio objects have been discovered in the Evolutionary Map of the Universe Pilot Survey, observed with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. These objects appear as circular edge-brightened discs in radio images, with a diameter of about one arcmin, differing from previously reported objects. Various possible mechanisms for the formation of these objects have been explored, but none seem to provide a compelling explanation.
