Accelerating galaxy winds during the big bang of starbursts

Matthew J. Hayes

Summary: We have developed a new method to infer the properties of galaxy outflows, by combining stellar spectral modelling and absorption lines. Using this method, we found that winds in starburst galaxies accelerate throughout the starburst phase and reach typical radii of around 1 kpc in approximately 10 Myr. Mass flow rates increase rapidly with time and the gas will likely unbind from the local potential and enrich the circumgalactic medium. Additionally, we have modeled the energy deposition from stellar winds and supernovae and found that a significant amount is accounted for in the cool outflow at later times.

Haro 11-Untying the knots of the nuclear starburst

M. Sirressi et al.

Summary: Star formation is a scattered process that impacts the structure and evolution of galaxies. This study focuses on Haro 11, a dwarf galaxy, and investigates the star formation process in three knots. By utilizing high-resolution imaging, the researchers are able to identify tens of bright star clusters and determine their masses and ages. Through further analysis, it is observed that the star formation process occurs from the oldest knot to the youngest knot. Additionally, spectroscopic analysis reveals the properties and feedback of the stellar populations in different regions. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of star formation in high-redshift galaxies.

The synchrony of production and escape: half the bright Lyα emitters at z ≈ 2 have Lyman continuum escape fractions ≈50 per cent

Rohan P. Naidu et al.

Summary: The ionizing photon escape fraction is a significant unknown factor in reionization research. By inferring the escape fraction using Lyα profiles, this study identifies distinct differences between LyC leakers and non-leakers. The leakers exhibit extreme equivalent widths and high ionization rates, suggesting a close relationship between these characteristics and photon escape.

Direct Constraints on the Extremely Metal-poor Massive Stars Underlying Nebular C iv Emission from Ultra-deep HST/COS Ultraviolet Spectroscopy

Peter Senchyna et al.

Summary: Metal-poor nearby galaxies hosting massive stars play a crucial role in understanding high-redshift galaxies and low-metallicity stellar populations. This study focuses on the strong nebular gas emission powered by massive stars in these galaxies, and reveals the influence of the hot circumgalactic medium on the escape of C iv. The metallicity of the massive stars is determined using photospheric absorption lines, showing that the iron-driven measurements are uniformly below 10% solar. Furthermore, the comparison with gas-phase oxygen abundances suggests that these local systems are more chemically similar to their primordial high-redshift counterparts.

Tracing Lyα and LyC Escape in Galaxies with Mg ii Emission

Xinfeng Xu et al.

Summary: Star-forming galaxies are the likely source of Lyman continuum photons that reionized the intergalactic medium at high redshifts. Indirect indicators for Lyman continuum have been developed and emission from the Mg ii doublet has been proposed as a promising proxy. In this study, observations for eight Lyman continuum emitter candidates were conducted and LyC emission was detected in 50% of the galaxies. The escape fraction of Mg ii correlates with that of Ly alpha and can be used to estimate the escape fraction of Lyman continuum.

Lyman continuum leakage from low-mass galaxies with M☆ < 108 M⊙

Y. I. Izotov et al.

Summary: Observations of nine low-mass star-forming galaxies show a tight anticorrelation between Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage and velocity separation V-sep, with V-sep remaining the best indicator of LyC leakage. Contrary to previous expectations, no increase of LyC escape fraction (f(esc)(LyC)) with decreasing galaxy stellar mass M-star was found in this study.

Summary: Lyman alpha (Ly alpha) emission from star-forming galaxies is a crucial tool in astrophysics, but the lack of spectroscopic reference samples has hindered detailed study. Radiation Hydrodynamics of Turbulent H ii Regions in Molecular Clouds: A Physical Origin of LyC Leakage and the Associated Lyα Spectra

Koki Kakiichi et al.

Summary: In this study, Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage through H ii regions regulated by turbulence and radiative feedback in a giant molecular cloud was investigated using fully coupled radiation hydrodynamics. The results show that ionizing photons can leak out early through turbulence-generated low column density channels, resulting in a diverse Ly alpha spectral morphology. The implications of turbulent H ii regions on other nebular emission lines were discussed, providing a hypothesis to explain high LyC leakage from very young star-forming galaxies without the need for extreme galactic outflows or supernova feedback.

Summary: In this study, the spectra of 10 Green Pea galaxies were analyzed using a semi-analytical line transfer model to interpret emission and absorption features in UV galactic spectra, with a focus on the ionization states of silicon. The relationships between outflowing H I gas distribution and kinematics, Ly alpha escape fraction, and Ly alpha emission peak separation were studied, revealing the impact of outflow geometries on Ly alpha escape. Additionally, the effects of outflow kinematics on Ly alpha luminosity were explored, suggesting a possible explanation for the observed Ly alpha luminosity in these objects.
