Frequency dependence of the thermal dust E/B ratio and EB correlation: Insights from the spin-moment expansion

L. Vacher et al.

Summary: The change of physical conditions in the interstellar medium causes a variation of the properties of Galactic polarized emission in 3D space. This results in frequency dependence of the polarization angle, as well as different frequency dependencies for the total Stokes parameters Q and U. By utilizing the spin-moment formalism, we demonstrate that this phenomenon also introduces distortions in the polarized angular power spectra D-l(EE), D-l(BB), and D-l(EB), leading to a variation of the D-l(EE) = D-l(BB) ratio with frequency. This understanding is crucial for accurately modeling the dust signal in cosmic microwave background component separation, and caution is required when assuming the spectral behavior of the dust EB signal based on other dust angular power spectra.

Mapping gas around massive galaxies: cross-correlation of DES Y3 galaxies and Compton-y maps from SPT and Planck

J. Sanchez et al.

Summary: We perform cross-correlation analysis between galaxy positions from the Dark Energy Survey and Compton-y maps generated from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Planck mission data. Our measurements provide constraints on the distribution of gas in the Universe, including the hydrostatic mass bias and the mean halo bias-weighted electron pressure. We find that the values obtained are consistent with previous work in the measured redshift range, and the data prefer a higher value of electron pressure than the simulated profiles within the galaxies' haloes.

Galaxy cluster SZ detection with unbiased noise estimation: an iterative approach

Inigo Zubeldia et al.

Summary: Multi-frequency matched filters (MMFs) are commonly used to detect galaxy clusters from CMB data, but estimating the cross-frequency power spectra of the noise incorrectly leads to overestimated MMF noise and biases in cosmological inference. We propose an iterative MMF (iMMF) approach that improves the estimates by reestimating the noise power spectra after the first MMF step. Applying the iMMF to Planck-like mock observations suppresses the mentioned effects and leads to more significant detections, a higher number of them, and a cluster observable with the expected theoretical properties.

High precision modeling of polarized signals: Moment expansion method generalized to spin-2 fields

L. Vacher et al.

Summary: The modeling and removal of foregrounds is a major challenge in the search for inflation signals in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This work introduces a generalization of intensity moment expansion to the spin-2 field of linear polarization and demonstrates its application in modeling the frequency-dependent polarization angle.

CMB/kSZ and Compton-y Maps from 2500 deg2 of SPT-SZ and Planck Survey Data

L. E. Bleem et al.

Summary: This study presents component-separated maps of the primary cosmic microwave background/kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) amplitude and the thermal SZ Compton-y parameter. The maps, created using data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the Planck satellite, have higher angular resolution and lower noise at small angular scales compared to previous products. Validation tests show good performance in sky modeling and combination algorithms. These data products have great potential for astrophysical and cosmological analyses.

Improving Cosmological Constraints from Galaxy Cluster Number Counts with CMB-cluster-lensing Data: Results from the SPT-SZ Survey and Forecasts for the Future

P. S. Chaubal et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the improvement of cosmological constraints in galaxy cluster surveys by incorporating cosmic microwave background (CMB)-cluster lensing data. The addition of cluster data reduces the uncertainty in sigma(8), a cosmological parameter, and future measurements are predicted to further enhance constraints on the dark energy equation of state w. The largest improvements are found in the sigma(8) measurement, with respective reductions in uncertainty for SPT-3G and CMB-S4.

Combining Planck and SPT Cluster Catalogs: Cosmological Analysis and Impact on the Planck Scaling Relation Calibration

L. Salvati et al.

Summary: We provide the first combined cosmological analysis of the South Pole Telescope and Planck cluster catalogs, aiming to calibrate the Planck scaling relations independently. The results show deviations from self-similar evolution in both mass slope and mass bias, which are mainly driven by the matter density value preferred by the South Pole Telescope data.

A multisimulation study of relativistic SZ temperature scalings in galaxy clusters and groups

Elizabeth Lee et al.

Summary: The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect is an important tool in cosmology. This study compares cluster temperatures predicted by different simulations and finds consistent SZ temperatures across the simulations. However, there is a systematic offset between the relativistic SZ (rSZ) temperature and other measures, with rSZ temperature being approximately 20% higher. The study also explores the variations of these measures with halo radius and investigates the effects of different feedback prescriptions and resolutions on the observed temperatures.

Simple halo model formalism for the cosmic infrared background and its correlation with the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect

A. Maniyar et al.

Summary: In this study, a new halo model for modeling the anisotropies of the CIB was proposed, requiring only four parameters. The model successfully fits both Planck and Herschel CIB power spectra and is consistent with the star formation history derived from infrared deep surveys. The star formation efficiency in an intermediate-age galaxy was found to be 0.19 and 0.21 at redshifts 0.1 and 2, respectively.

Summary: The study focuses on the spectral energy distribution of dust emission and its significance in the quest for primordial B-modes, expanding the dust SED at the power spectrum level to address uncertainties in current approximations. High-order moments are demonstrated to be essential for fitting the Planck data accurately, highlighting the importance of understanding spatial variations in MBB parameters for future CMB B-mode experiments.

Understanding matched filters for precision cosmology

Inigo Zubeldia et al.

Summary: Matched filters are commonly used in cosmology to detect galaxy clusters through their thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich signature. This study shows that the observable signal-to-noise is generally non-Gaussian and suffers from an optimization bias. Monte Carlo mock observations indicate that the signal-to-noise can be well-described by a unit-variance Gaussian for values of 6 and above, with a quantified magnitude of the optimization bias provided for practical use.
