Particle acceleration in shearing flows: the self-generation of turbulent spine-sheath structures in relativistic magnetohydrodynamic jet simulations

Jie-Shuang Wang et al.

Summary: X-ray observations of kiloparsec-scale extragalactic jets indicate a synchrotron origin and the short cooling times of emitting electrons require a distributed electron acceleration. In this study, 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations are performed to investigate the formation of a spine-sheath structure and turbulence development in a relativistic jet propagating into a static cocoon. The results show that a sheath is generated on the interface of the spine and the cocoon due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, and turbulence develops with Kolmogorov scaling in both the spine and the sheath.

A Simulation Study of Ultra-relativistic Jets. III. Particle Acceleration in FR-II Jets

Jeongbhin Seo et al.

Summary: We simulated the acceleration of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in Class II Fanaroff-Riley (FR-II) radio galaxies using Monte Carlo simulations. We found that CRs gain energy mainly through diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in the jet-spine flow and backflow, and through relativistic shear acceleration (RSA) at the jet-backflow interface. The power-law spectrum of escaping particles is determined by the jet power, with a break energy corresponding to the size-limited maximum energy. We concluded that giant radio galaxies could be major contributors to UHECRs.

High-energy Neutrino Emission from Espresso-reaccelerated Ions in Jets of Active Galactic Nuclei

Rostom Mbarek et al.

Summary: We calculate the flux of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and high-energy neutrinos produced by active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamic jet simulations. We find that UHECRs in AGN jets are not significantly affected by photodisintegration, consistent with observations favoring a heavy composition at the highest energies. We also estimate the flux of high-energy neutrinos from AGN jets and find that these neutrinos may account for a sizable fraction of the expected flux, but cannot fully explain the observed flux. Our results suggest that nearby radio galaxies may be more promising as potential sources of UHECRs and neutrinos.

Echoes of the past: ultra-high-energy cosmic rays accelerated by radio galaxies, scattered by starburst galaxies

A. R. Bell et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility that the detected hotspot of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) from the direction of M82 and the M81 group of galaxies could be the result of echoes from previous emissions by Centaurus A. The research also considers the impact of echoes from other starburst galaxies or groups of galaxies on the UHECR flux at Earth. Synthetic sky maps are created using a Monte Carlo model of monoenergetic UHECR transport by small-angle scattering, providing insights into energetics, time scales, and distance scales. The findings suggest that the observed UHECR hotspots can be explained by a viable echo model if Centaurus A had 200 times its present luminosity 20 million years ago and if ordered magnetic fields exceeding 10-20 nG were present in the circumgalactic medium of M82 and other starburst galaxies extending up to a distance of 400-800 kpc.

Particle Acceleration in Relativistic Shearing Flows: Energy Spectrum

Frank M. Rieger et al.

Summary: In this paper, we discuss the acceleration of charged particles in relativistic shearing flows and obtain analytical solutions to their energy spectra. We find that in the highly relativistic limit, the particle energy spectrum follows a power law relationship, while at mildly relativistic flow speeds, the spectrum is more sensitive to the underlying flow profile.

Active Galactic Nuclei as Potential Sources of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays

Frank M. Rieger

Summary: This review presents a class of promising ultra-high-energy cosmic ray accelerators, which are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their relativistic jets. The review summarizes recent experimental findings and discusses possible interpretations and astrophysical constraints on source energetics. It argues that stochastic shear particle acceleration in large-scale jets and first-order Fermi acceleration at trans-relativistic shocks represent the most promising mechanisms for UHECR acceleration based on our current understanding.

High-energy Neutrinos from Magnetized Coronae of Active Galactic Nuclei and Prospects for Identification of Seyfert Galaxies and Quasars in Neutrino Telescopes

Ali Kheirandish et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the acceleration of particles in magnetized coronae through magnetic reconnections and plasma turbulence that lead to high-energy neutrinos and soft gamma-rays. Results indicate that nearby bright Seyfert galaxies, such as NGC 1068 in the Northern sky and Cen A in the Southern sky, show promise for detection of neutrino signals. It emphasizes the need for future neutrino detectors with better sensitivity to medium-energy ranges to identify the origin of high-energy cosmic neutrinos, reinforcing the idea that hidden cores of supermassive black holes are the dominant sources of high-energy neutrino emission.

Espresso and Stochastic Acceleration of Ultra-high-energy Cosmic Rays in Relativistic Jets

Rostom Mbarek et al.

Summary: In this study, it is found that a high scattering rate promotes the energization of lower-energy cosmic rays, resulting in harder ultra-high-energy cosmic ray spectra. Additionally, it is noted that the particles reaching the highest energies are consistently produced by espresso acceleration, with their spectrum being independent of the assumed scattering rate.

Particle acceleration in shearing flows: the case for large-scale jets

Jie-Shuang Wang et al.

Summary: X-ray observations of kiloparsec-scale jets suggest that sustained non-thermal emission is likely due to synchrotron origin, requiring distributed electron acceleration up to near PeV energies. Shear acceleration is proposed as a potential mechanism, with velocity-shear stratification being a natural consequence of collimated jet flow. This study provides insights into the details of shear acceleration and offers a general solution for trans-relativistic jets with a range of magnetohydrodynamic turbulent power-law spectra.
