Gaussian processes for glitch-robust gravitational-wave astronomy

Gregory Ashton

Summary: Interferometric gravitational-wave observatories have ushered in a new era in astronomy, allowing for detailed analysis of the curved space-time around black holes. However, these detectors are plagued by transient noise artefacts known as 'glitches' that contaminate signals and affect inferences.

Second release of the CoRe database of binary neutron star merger waveforms

Alejandra Gonzalez et al.

Summary: We present the second data release of binary neutron star (BNS) merger simulations performed by the Computational Relativity (CoRE) collaboration. The current database contains 254 different BNS configurations and a total of 590 individual numerical-relativity simulations. The released waveform data include strain and Weyl curvature multipoles up to l = m = 4, spanning a significant portion of the parameter space.

Using machine learning to parametrize postmerger signals from binary neutron stars

Tim Whittaker et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in detecting and characterizing gravitational waves from postmerger oscillations of binary neutron stars. However, constructing postmerger waveforms for neutron stars is more complex due to theoretical uncertainties in the equation of state, limited numerical simulations, and challenges in parameterizing theoretical uncertainties. This study demonstrates the use of conditional variational autoencoders to build postmerger models for neutron star signals based on numerical-relativity simulations, showing potential for accurately generating and encoding equations of state in a useful latent representation.

SPIIR online coherent pipeline to search for gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences

Qi Chu et al.

Summary: This paper presents the Summed Parallel Infinite Impulse Response (SPIIR) pipeline used for public alerts during the third advanced LIGO and Virgo observation run (O3 run). The pipeline uses infinite impulse response (IIR) filters to perform extremely low-latency matched filtering and is accelerated with graphics processing units (GPUs). It selects candidates from multiple detectors using a coherent statistic and has demonstrated its effectiveness in the detection of public alerts.

Overview of KAGRA: Detector design and construction history

T. Akutsu et al.

Summary: KAGRA, a newly built gravitational-wave telescope in Kamioka, Gifu, Japan, with arms comprising a 3-km laser interferometer, operates underground with cryogenic mirrors to reduce noise. In 2019, KAGRA completed all installations with the designed configuration, known as the baseline KAGRA, and an overview of it is presented in a series of articles. This article introduces the design configurations of KAGRA and its historical background.

The evolution of binary neutron star post-merger remnants: a review

Nikhil Sarin et al.

Summary: Research has been conducted on observational and theoretical knowledge of binary neutron star post-merger remnants, including the possibility of the remnant collapsing to form a black hole and the potential formation of long-lived neutron stars in other merger events. The evolution of short- and long-lived remnants, as well as prospects for detection of gravitational waves and electromagnetic observations, have been discussed.
