Utilization of convolutional neural networks for H I source finding Team FORSKA-Sweden approach to SKA Data Challenge 2

Henrik Hakansson et al.

Summary: This study explores how existing astronomical knowledge and tools can be used in a machine learning-based pipeline to detect 3D spectral line sources. The authors design a source-finding pipeline to detect 21-cm emission from galaxies, which achieves the second-best result in the SKA Science Data Challenge 2. The pipeline involves convolutional neural network for galaxy segmentation and existing source-finding software SOFIA for source characterization, with adjustable parameters for performance fine-tuning.

A comparative study of source-finding techniques in H I emission line cubes using SoFiA, MTObjects, and supervised deep learning

J. A. Barkai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to find the optimal pipeline for identifying and masking H I sources in 3D neutral hydrogen data cubes. Traditional statistical approaches, machine learning techniques, and a new supervised deep learning approach were tested. The results showed that SoFiA combined with a random forest classifier provided the best results.

CHILES. VII. Deep Imaging for the CHILES Project, an SKA Prototype

R. Dodson et al.

Summary: Radio astronomy is going through a renaissance with the emergence of next-generation instruments that greatly improve collecting area and sensitivity. However, addressing systematic effects is crucial in achieving the desired level of sensitivity in science data products. The CHILES project, a deep H i survey of the COSMOS field, presents its approach for creating image cubes from the first epoch and discusses the quantification of data quality as well as the problems encountered. Managing and correcting systematic effects are essential in delivering high-fidelity images, and CHILES serves as a valuable test bed for future deep imaging surveys.

Toward a Spanish SKA Regional Centre fully engaged with open science

Julian Garrido et al.

Summary: The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) is building the most sensitive radio telescopes on Earth to address fundamental questions in astrophysics, fundamental physics, and astrobiology. The project poses a technological challenge as it requires processing and handling complex and massive amounts of data. The Spanish prototype SRC (SPSRC) supports preparatory scientific activities for SKA projects and promotes open science practices to enable scientific reproducibility.

Summary: As the largest radio telescope in the world, SKA will lead the next generation of radio astronomy, driving the development of efficient and accurate analysis methods. The first Science Data Challenge (SDC1) presented diverse approaches successfully used for source detection, characterization, and classification in a deep, crowded field. High-resolution observations reveal the complexity of the sky, highlighting the challenge of effectively handling highly resolved and complex sources.

Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope Detection of Hi 21 cm Emission from Star-forming Galaxies at z ≈ 1.3

Aditya Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 400-hour search for Hi 21 cm emission from star-forming galaxies using GMRT, resulting in a 5.0 sigma detection of the average Hi 21 cm signal from 2841 galaxies at an average redshift z approximately 1.3. The study found that the average Hi mass and Hi-to-stellar mass ratio in galaxies at this redshift were significantly higher than those in similar galaxies in the local universe. Additionally, the study stacked the 1.4 GHz continuum emission of the galaxies to obtain a median star formation rate.

SOFIA 2-an automated, parallel H I source finding pipeline for the WALLABY survey

T. Westmeier et al.

Summary: SOFIA 2 is a fully automated 3D source finding pipeline for the WALLABY extragalactic HI survey with ASKAP, implemented in the c programming language and utilizing OpenMP for multithreading. It has substantially improved speed and reduced memory footprint compared to its predecessor, allowing real-time processing of large imaging data volumes. Performance tests using mock galaxies in genuine ASKAP data show near-100% completeness and reliability above a certain signal-to-noise ratio threshold.
