A Census of Optically Dark Massive Galaxies in the Early Universe from Magnification by Lensing Galaxy Clusters

Xinwen Shu et al.

Summary: The study presents one of the most sensitive searches for dust emission in optically dark and strongly lensed galaxies in cluster fields. The results suggest the existence of a missing population of massive star-forming galaxies in the early Universe, which may dominate the star formation rate density at the massive end.

Exploring the interpretability of deep neural networks used for gravitational lens finding with a sensitivity probe

C. Jacobs et al.

Summary: Artificial neural networks are increasingly used in astronomy, but understanding their limitations can be challenging. This study utilizes a statistical method to evaluate the sensitivity of neural networks in classifying images of galaxy-galaxy strong lenses. The results show that the networks are highly sensitive to color, the simulated PSF, and occlusion of light, while being insensitive to other factors.

Strong lensing in UNIONS: Toward a pipeline from discovery to modeling

E. Savary et al.

Summary: In this study, a search for galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses was conducted in the initial 2500 square degrees of the Canada-France Imaging Survey. A convolutional neural network committee was designed and applied to a selection of 2,344,002 r-band images of color-selected luminous red galaxies. A total of 133 lens candidates were found, of which 104 were completely new. The candidates were analyzed using an automated modeling step, providing distributions of properties for both sources and lenses.

Search of strong lens systems in the Dark Energy Survey using convolutional neural networks

K. Rojas et al.

Summary: In this study, a large sample of luminous red galaxies was screened using convolutional neural networks to identify strong lens candidates. A total of 186 new lens candidates were discovered, with 90 of them selected for further analysis, showing promising results in color deblending and automated modeling testing.
