Measuring cosmic filament spin with the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect

Yi Zheng et al.

Summary: Researchers have investigated the spin of intergalactic filaments and proposed a method to measure it by combining galaxy redshift surveys with cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments to detect the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) dipole signal. The results show that the signal can be detected with the combination of DESI and future CMB experiments.

Projected-field kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Cross-correlations: halo model and forecasts

Boris Bolliet et al.

Summary: The kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect, which is the Doppler boost of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons caused by their scattering off free electrons in galaxy clusters and groups with non-zero bulk velocity, provides valuable insights into baryons in the universe. This study presents the first halo-model computation of the cross-power spectrum of the projected-field kSZ signal with large-scale structure (LSS) tracers and compares and validates the calculations against previous studies. The results include forecasted measurements from CMB maps and LSS survey data, demonstrating the potential for precise measurements of gas density profile and cross-correlation with other observables.

Gas clumping and its effect on hydrostatic bias in the MACSIS simulations

Imogen Towler et al.

Summary: We use hydrodynamical simulations to investigate gas clumping in galaxy clusters' intracluster medium and its effects on hydrostatic mass bias. We find that clumping and azimuthal scatter both increase with radius and are higher in more massive and dynamically perturbed systems. Similar trends are seen for temperature scatter and non-thermal pressure fraction. However, there is only a weak correlation between clumping and mass bias. To reduce clumping in projected profiles, we calculate the azimuthal median, which reduces bias scatter. We also attempt mass corrections using non-thermal pressure and find different results for 3D and projected gas profiles.

Looking for a twist: probing the cosmological gravitomagnetic effect via weak lensing-kSZ cross-correlations

Cristian Barrera-Hinojosa et al.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of detecting the gravitomagnetic field through cross-correlations. By cross-correlating the weak-lensing convergence field with the cosmic microwave background temperature map, the researchers were able to extract the gravitomagnetic effect. The study found that insufficient simulation resolution can introduce significant spurious correlations between the weak-lensing convergence field and the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect.

Detection of pairwise kSZ effect with DESI galaxy clusters and Planck

Ziyang Chen et al.

Summary: We report a 5 sigma detection of the pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect using a combination of galaxy clusters in DESI imaging surveys and the Planck temperature maps. The detection is achieved through improvements in data and analysis method, and it provides important information about the clusters. The study suggests that the signal of the kSZ effect can be significantly improved with additional DESI spectroscopic redshift information and other CMB experiments.

A multisimulation study of relativistic SZ temperature scalings in galaxy clusters and groups

Elizabeth Lee et al.

Summary: The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect is an important tool in cosmology. This study compares cluster temperatures predicted by different simulations and finds consistent SZ temperatures across the simulations. However, there is a systematic offset between the relativistic SZ (rSZ) temperature and other measures, with rSZ temperature being approximately 20% higher. The study also explores the variations of these measures with halo radius and investigates the effects of different feedback prescriptions and resolutions on the observed temperatures.

Measuring the Gravitomagnetic Distortion from Rotating Halos. I. Methods

Chengfeng Tang et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the lensing convergence κ around rotating dark matter halos, finding that the gravitomagnetic potential generated by the rotation of massive objects contributes to an anisotropic lensing potential. Testing an estimator using simulation data for future surveys, the signal from frame-dragging of stacked rotating lenses is shown to be consistent with zero within 1 sigma, while the rotation velocity of the most massive cluster in the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic selected group catalog suggests a potential detection of gravitomagnetic distortion.

On the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect as an observational probe for halo spin bias

Antonio D. Montero-Dorta et al.

Summary: The study examines the potential of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect as a tool for observing halo spin bias, confirming strong dependence of both kSZ and tSZ effects on the total gas and virial mass of halos. The integrated kSZ signal and the ratio of kSZ to tSZ signals are found to trace total halo spin, offering a promising route for future observational probes on halo spin bias.

Understanding matched filters for precision cosmology

Inigo Zubeldia et al.

Summary: Matched filters are commonly used in cosmology to detect galaxy clusters through their thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich signature. This study shows that the observable signal-to-noise is generally non-Gaussian and suffers from an optimization bias. Monte Carlo mock observations indicate that the signal-to-noise can be well-described by a unit-variance Gaussian for values of 6 and above, with a quantified magnitude of the optimization bias provided for practical use.
