Can tides explain the low dark matter density in Fornax?

Anna Genina et al.

Summary: Research suggests that star formation in the Fornax dwarf galaxy is not necessarily indicative of infall time, as simulated dwarfs with similar properties to Fornax can still form stars after infall. Tidal effects can reduce dark matter density while maintaining the cuspy profile. It is predicted that if the reduction in dark matter density in Fornax is due to Galactic tides, tidal tails should be visible.

Baryonic solutions and challenges for cosmological models of dwarf galaxies

Laura Sales et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the challenges that galaxies and their dark-matter haloes pose to the dark energy plus cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model, particularly in relation to dwarf galaxies, and the insights provided by recent cosmological numerical simulations. The discrepancies between observations and CDM predictions for low-mass dark-matter haloes are partially expected due to the lack of a model for galaxy formation. Improved galaxy-formation models and numerical accuracy are needed to resolve the remaining tensions and validate any actual problems with the CDM model.

Breaking beta: a comparison of mass modelling methods for spherical systems

J. Read et al.

Summary: In this study, four different mass modelling methods were applied to mock data for spherical stellar systems, showing good recovery of density and velocity anisotropy for isotropic and tangentially anisotropic data, but facing challenges with radially anisotropic data. Only methods incorporating shape information of the velocity distribution function were able to break the degeneracy between the density profile and the velocity anisotropy for line-of-sight data, while including proper motion data led to further improvements in recovering both radial density and velocity anisotropy profiles.

The asymptotic tidal remnants of cold dark matter subhaloes

Raphael Errani et al.

Summary: Using N-body simulations, we studied the evolution of cuspy cold dark matter haloes in the gravitational potential of a massive host. Tidal mass-losses reshape the haloes, leaving behind bound remnants. The density profile of tidal remnants is determined by the fraction of mass lost, and can approach an exponentially truncated Navarro-Frenk-White profile with heavy mass-loss.

EDGE: two routes to dark matter core formation in ultra-faint dwarfs

Matthew D. A. Orkney et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that gravitational potential fluctuations within the central region of simulated ultra-faint dwarf galaxies kinematically heat dark matter particles, lowering the central dark matter density. By modifying the initial conditions of the dwarfs, they showed that a delayed assembly history leads to more late minor mergers, resulting in further dark matter heating. Late major mergers can regenerate a central dark matter cusp, suggesting significant stochasticity in the central dark matter density slopes of the smallest dwarfs.

The MUSE-Faint survey II. The dark-matter density profile of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Eridanus 2

Sebastiaan L. Zoutendijk et al.

Summary: Using stellar line-of-sight velocities, the study constrained the dark matter density profile of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Eridanus 2, deriving constraints on self-interacting and fuzzy dark matter scenarios. The results favored cold dark matter over self-interacting dark matter, and provided evidence for fuzzy dark matter. The study also found consistency with the literature regarding the mass-to-light ratio and set limits on core and soliton sizes. The constraints on self-interaction and fuzzy-dark matter particle mass offered complementary information and challenged previous results obtained for larger dwarf galaxies.

Andromeda XXI - a dwarf galaxy in a low-density dark matter halo

Michelle L. M. Collins et al.

Summary: In this study, dynamical observations were conducted on the And XXI galaxy, revealing a lower dark matter density than expected. Analysis of member stars' metallicity suggested possible explanations for And XXI's low density to be extreme tidal stripping or inhabiting a low-concentration halo.
