Kagoshima galactic object survey with the Nobeyama 45-metre telescope by mapping in ammonia lines (KAGONMA): star formation feedback on dense molecular gas in the W33 complex

Takeru Murase et al.

Summary: Results of NH3 and H2O maser simultaneous mapping observations towards the high-mass star-forming region W33 were presented. The high-temperature region near W33 Main is consistent with interaction between the compact H II region and peripheral molecular gas, leading to complex NH3 absorption features.

Nature of Supersonic Turbulence and Density Distribution Function in the Multiphase Interstellar Medium

Masato I. N. Kobayashi et al.

Summary: Supersonic flows in the interstellar medium are crucial for the formation and evolution of molecular clouds; the ratio between solenoidal and compressive modes of turbulence plays a key role in determining the star formation efficiency; numerical simulations provide insights into the turbulence structure and density distribution of the multiphase ISM.

Systematic Investigation of Dust and Gaseous CO in 12 Nearby Molecular Clouds

John Arban Lewis et al.

Summary: This study reports on the first uniform and systematic study of dust and molecular gas in nearby molecular clouds. The authors determine the opacity and map the distribution of dust within a dozen local clouds using surveys of dust extinction and emission, deriving a uniform set of basic cloud properties. The study finds that CO observations are a poor tracer of column density and structure on sub-cloud spatial scales, but can provide measurements consistent with those of dust on cloud scales when analyzed in a similar fashion.

Gas Column Density Distribution of Molecular Clouds in the Third Quadrant of the Milky Way

Yuehui Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, column density maps of 120 molecular clouds in the third quadrant of the Milky Way midplane were obtained using high-sensitivity data. The molecular hydrogen column density distribution can be fitted with both lognormal and power-law functions. The clouds can be classified into three categories based on the shape of the column density distribution. A scaling relation between the width of the distribution and the average column density is found, while no correlation is observed between the width and the mass of the clouds. The dispersion of normalized column density shows a correlation with the sonic Mach number. Molecular clouds with active star formation activity tend to have high-density tails in their column density distribution, as predicted by numerical simulations.

The sonic scale of interstellar turbulence

Christoph Federrath et al.

Summary: Understanding the physics of turbulence is crucial for various applications, including weather, industry, and astrophysics. By presenting a simulation of interstellar turbulence, researchers were able to determine the sonic scale transition and velocity structure, providing quantitative input for models of filament structure and star formation in molecular clouds. Key findings included the measurements of the supersonic and subsonic cascade with velocity as a function of scale, where the transition from supersonic to subsonic turbulence was shown to occur smoothly over a factor of 3 in scale.

Yuehui Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of molecular clouds in the second quadrant of the Milky Way Midplane using data from different emission lines. The molecular clouds in the Perseus Arm are found to be larger and more massive than those in the Local Arm, with enhanced surface densities.

The density structure of supersonic self-gravitating turbulence

Shivan Khullar et al.

Summary: This study uses numerical experiments to investigate the density probability distribution function in supersonic, isothermal, self-gravitating turbulence, showing a universal form consisting of a lognormal at low density and power-law tails at higher density. It introduces a new diagnostic, the dimensionless star formation efficiency versus density curve, and demonstrates the influence of both the Mach number and the virial parameter on the PDF shape.
