Eddington accreting black holes in the epoch of reionization

Fabio Fontanot et al.

Summary: The evolution of the luminosity function of high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) plays a key role in understanding their contribution to the ionizing photon budget for the epoch of reionization. Recent studies suggest that the space densities of bright high-z AGNs need to be revised upwards and raise new questions about their evolutionary paths. Gas accretion is the crucial mechanism for the distribution of luminous sources and the growth of central supermassive black holes (SMBHs). This work models the high-z AGN luminosity function assuming that high-z luminous AGNs shine at their Eddington limit and investigates the expected evolution based on the 'duty cycle' (f(dc)), which represents the fraction of time a SMBH spends accreting at the Eddington rate. Results suggest that intermediate values of f(dc) (around 0.1) best agree with the ionizing background and photoionization rate, while smaller values (less than or equal to 0.5) are required for AGNs to be the dominant population responsible for hydrogen reionization in the early Universe.

The Space Density of Ultra-luminous QSOs at the End of Reionization Epoch by the QUBRICS Survey and the AGN Contribution to the Hydrogen Ionizing Background

Andrea Grazian et al.

Summary: Motivated by evidences favoring a rapid and late hydrogen reionization process completing at z similar to 5.2-5.5 and mainly driven by rare and luminous sources, the research reassessed the estimate of the space density of ultra-luminous QSOs at z similar to 5 in the framework of the QUBRICS survey. The results suggest a steep bright-end slope for the QSO luminosity function at z similar to 5 and a mild redshift evolution of the space density of ultrabright QSOs (M-1450 similar to -28.5) at 3 < z < 5.5, in agreement with the redshift evolution of the much fainter active galactic nucleus (AGN) population at M-1450 similar to -23. These findings indicate the importance of AGNs in the cosmological reionization process.

Near-infrared spectroscopy of extreme BAL QSOs from the QUBRICS bright quasar survey

Guido Cupani et al.

Summary: This article reports on the spectral confirmation of 18 quasi-stellar object (QSO) candidates from the QUasars as BRIght beacons for Cosmology in the Southern hemisphere (QUBRICS) survey. Through analysis of near-infrared spectroscopic data, it is confirmed that these candidates are bona fide QSOs, with a majority being broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs, and almost half displaying strong Fe II absorption.

Unveiling the Universe with emerging cosmological probes

Michele Moresco et al.

Summary: The discovery of accelerated expansion in the Universe is a major breakthrough in modern cosmology. Different cosmological probes have been studied to understand this acceleration and constraints have been achieved, but tensions between measurements from different methods have surfaced recently. It is crucial to expand the selection of cosmological probes to validate results and increase accuracy.

Forecasting cosmic acceleration measurements using the Lyman-α forest

Chenxing Dong et al.

Summary: The study presents end-to-end simulations aiming to constrain the rate of change in the expansion history of the Universe through redshift drift of Lyman-alpha forest absorption lines. Results show that using a dedicated facility and designed observing plan, redshift drift can be detected with 3σ significance in 15 years.

The probabilistic random forest applied to the QUBRICS survey: improving the selection of high-redshift quasars with synthetic data

Francesco Guarneri et al.

Summary: This study focuses on training a probabilistic random forest (PRF) model using synthetic data to improve completeness in higher redshift bins. By comparing the performances of PRF trained on magnitude data and color data, it is found that using color as a feature slightly improves the results. The algorithm achieves a completeness of approximately 86% and a contamination of approximately 36% on a testing data set. The study confirms the ability of PRF to select high-z quasars in large data sets.

Cosmological impact of redshift drift measurements

J. Esteves et al.

Summary: The redshift drift can be used as a model-independent probe of fundamental cosmology, but can also be used to constrain model parameters when combined with a specific fiducial model. Different methods for measuring redshift drift have varying levels of effectiveness in constraining different cosmological parameters such as matter density and dark energy equation of state. Trade-offs exist between optimizing for accurate redshift drift measurements and using those measurements to constrain cosmological parameters, which must be carefully considered in the design and construction of next-generation instruments.

The Luminosity Function of Bright QSOs at z ∼ 4 and Implications for the Cosmic Ionizing Background

Konstantina Boutsia et al.

Summary: Recent surveys have shown an upward revision in the number of bright quasars at redshifts z > 3. It is believed that at bright magnitudes, the number densities of such sources could have been underestimated by 30%-40%. The QUBRICS survey identified 58 bright QSOs at 3.6 <= z <= 4.2 and extended the sampled absolute magnitude range.

The probabilistic random forest applied to the selection of quasar candidates in the QUBRICS survey

Francesco Guarneri et al.

Summary: The number of high-redshift QSOs in the Southern hemisphere is lower than in the Northern hemisphere, but recent works like the QUBRICS survey have successfully identified new high-redshift QSOs in the South using machine learning. A new QSO selection method based on the Probabilistic Random Forest algorithm shows promising results with improved accuracy and predictive models.
