JWST/NIRCam observations of stars and H ii regions in z ≃ 6-8 galaxies: properties of star-forming complexes on 150 pc scales

Zuyi Chen et al.

Summary: The advent of the JWST-era presents an improved opportunity to study the resolved structure of early star-forming systems. This study investigates the internal structure of luminous z ≈ 6-8 galaxies using JWST/NIRCam imaging. The galaxies exhibit clumpy structures in the rest-UV, with most of the light coming from star-forming complexes that are several hundred pc in size. The majority of the stellar mass is contained within these star-forming complexes.

Conditions for clump survival in High- z disc galaxies

Avishai Dekel et al.

Summary: We investigate the survival of giant clumps in high-redshift disc galaxies using analytic modeling and simulations. We establish a criterion for clump survival based on a survivability parameter S, which takes into account the energy sources and losses. We find that long-lived (L) clumps with certain characteristics are favored in galaxies with specific properties, while short-lived (S) clumps behave differently. A subtype of L clumps (LS) may explain the formation of globular clusters, and more massive L clumps (LL) exhibit a roughly constant star-formation rate over an extended period of time.

K-band Imaging of the Nearby Clumpy, Turbulent Disk Galaxy DYNAMO G04-1

Heidi A. White et al.

Summary: This study presents a case study of stellar clumps in the G04-1 galaxy at z=0.13 using adaptive optics-enabled K-band imaging. The study identifies various stellar clumps with different masses, and these masses decrease by half after applying a light correction for the underlying stellar disk. The majority of the clumps have associated components in H alpha maps and show radial trends in their properties. The study also finds enhanced star formation in all regions of the galaxy. The observed clumps are not consistent with strong radiative feedback in this galaxy.

The nature of giant clumps in high-z discs: a deep-learning comparison of simulations and observations

Omri Ginzburg et al.

Summary: We explore observed giant clumps in high-redshift disc galaxies using deep learning, detecting and classifying them based on cosmological simulations. The study shows similar abundances of LLCs and SLCs in simulations and observations, with LLCs being more massive and closer to the galactic center. The results suggest better clump survivability and formation mechanisms in high-mass galaxies.

Ovi traces photoionized streams with collisionally ionized boundaries in cosmological simulations of z ∼ 1 massive galaxies

Clayton Strawn et al.

Summary: In the VELA cosmological zoom-in simulations, the distribution and origin of Ovi in the CGM of dark-matter haloes are analyzed, showing that the ionization of Ovi is primarily through photoionization and collisional ionization. The distinction between the two ionization mechanisms coincides with different phases of the CGM, which provides insights into predicting the profiles of Ovi and other ions in future CGM observations.

Evaluating galaxy dynamical masses from kinematics and jeans equilibrium in simulations

Michael Kretschmer et al.

Summary: In this study, dynamical mass of galaxies is evaluated from kinematic measurements of stars or gas using analytic considerations and cosmological zoom-in simulations. It is found that Jeans or hydrostatic equilibrium is valid for galaxies with larger stellar masses, and a formula for evaluating dynamical mass is proposed.

Summary: The study reveals a bimodal distribution of bulge formation, with one wave forming in the early universe at redshift z = 6.2 and another wave dominating at redshift z = 1.3. The first-wave bulges are more compact than the second-wave bulges, and pure spheroids are coetaneous with the second-wave bulges.
