Coalescing black hole binaries from globular clusters: mass distributions and comparison to gravitational wave data from GWTC-3

Fabio Antonini et al.

Summary: This study explores the mass distribution of merging black hole binaries formed dynamically in globular clusters using the cBHBd model and compares it to the inferred distributions from the third gravitational wave transient catalog. The study finds that the main peak in the inferred primary black hole mass distribution cannot be explained by the models. However, a globular cluster origin can account for the presence of a secondary peak. Furthermore, the lack of a high-mass cut-off in the inferred mass distribution can be explained by the repopulation of an initial mass gap through hierarchical mergers.

Great balls of FIRE II: The evolution and destruction of star clusters across cosmic time in a Milky Way-mass galaxy

Carl L. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The fate of young massive star clusters in galaxies, whether they can become old globular clusters (GCs), is determined by a complex interplay of internal and external effects. We present the first star-by-star N-body models of massive star clusters formed in a Milky Way-mass galaxy simulation. Our results suggest that the masses and core/half-light radii of GCs are shaped not only by internal processes but also by the evolutionary history of their host galaxies. These findings emphasize the importance of N-body studies with realistic stellar physics for understanding the properties and evolution of GC systems.

A black hole detected in the young massive LMC cluster NGC 1850

S. Saracino et al.

Summary: We report the first direct detection of a black hole in a young massive cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The black hole is in a binary system with a main-sequence turn-off star and its mass and orbital inclination have been determined through observations. This discovery opens up possibilities for studying the early dynamical evolution of compact objects in high-density environments.

From dawn till disc: Milky Way's turbulent youth revealed by the APOGEE plus Gaia data

Vasily Belokurov et al.

Summary: This study uses accurate measurements of aluminium abundance to select a pure sample of stars born in the Milky Way with specific metallicity range. The low-metallicity in-situ component, named Aurora, exhibits distinct kinematic and chemical properties. The observed kinematic transformation and change in chemical abundances suggest a rapid formation of the Milky Way disc. The results also imply that these trends are common in the early evolution of Milky Way-sized galaxies.

Tidal disruption of star clusters in galaxy formation simulations

Xi Meng et al.

Summary: We investigated the evolution of tidal fields experienced by massive star clusters in Milky Way-sized galaxies using cosmological simulations. We found that the tidal force on clusters is strongest in the first few hundred million years after formation, after which it plateaus at a lower value. The fraction of time spent by clusters in high tidal strength regions decreases with age. In situ and ex situ clusters experience similar tidal fields at early ages, but in situ clusters generally experience stronger tidal fields at older ages due to their lower orbits. This difference in tidal fields affects the survival of clusters, with ex situ clusters typically having a higher bound fraction than in situ clusters.

Modeling the kinematics of globular cluster systems

Yingtian Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a model for the formation and evolution of globular clusters was presented. By assigning them to particles in a simulation, the positional and kinematic information of individual globular clusters was included. The analysis showed that ex-situ clusters are more common in outer galaxies and have greater velocity dispersions and orbital actions.

The contribution of N-rich stars to the Galactic stellar halo using APOGEE red giants

Danny Horta et al.

Summary: The contribution of dissolved globular clusters (GCs) to the stellar content of the Galactic halo varies with distance, with nitrogen-rich stars potentially representing disrupted GC members in the stellar field. The estimated total contribution of disrupted GC stars to the stellar halo mass budget differs significantly at different radii, indicating a non-uniform distribution of dissolved and/or evaporated GCs in the halo.

Radii of young star clusters in nearby galaxies

Gillen Brown et al.

Summary: The study found that most galaxies share a common cluster radius distribution, with a peak around 3 pc, and high-mass clusters are more likely to expand without tidal limitations. There is a relationship between cluster radius and mass at different ages, with a noticeable scatter in cluster density distributions that seems to decrease with increasing cluster age.
