Rhenium Radioisotopes for Medicine, a Focus on Production and Applications

Licia Uccelli et al.

Summary: The use of alpha, pure beta, or beta/gamma emitters as an alternative in oncology, endocrinology, and interventional cardiology rheumatology has been proven to be important. Rhenium-186 and rhenium-188 are two relevant radioisotopes used for therapy in nuclear medicine. Rhenium-186 is produced through direct neutron activation of rhenium-186 in nuclear reactors, while rhenium-188 is produced through the decay of parent tungsten-188.

Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry and Drug Development-What's Changed?

Charles A. Kunos et al.

Summary: Radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine physicians have observed a resurgence in the clinical use of radiopharmaceuticals for cancer treatment. The United States National Cancer Institute has adapted its clinical trial enterprise to facilitate the discovery and development of new targeted radiopharmaceutical treatments, viewing investigational radiopharmaceuticals as drugs with maximum tolerable doses determined by normal organ toxicity frequency. This shift in perspective has led to the emergence of alpha-particle and beta-particle emitters as a significant approach to cancer treatment, with resources allocated to biomarkers of molecular pathophysiology now used to select treatment or evaluate clinical performance of radiopharmaceuticals.

Simplified 89Zr-Labeling Protocol of Oxine (8-Hydroxyquinoline) Enabling Prolonged Tracking of Liposome-Based Nanomedicines and Cells

Andras Polyak et al.

Summary: This study optimized a method for the preparation of the highly lipophilic labeling synthon [Zr-89]Zr(oxinate)(4) for radiolabeling of liposomes and human induced pluripotent stem cells. The developed labeling protocol demonstrated high radiochemical yields and efficient cell internalization rates. Prolonged PET imaging confirmed the stability of labeled nanocarriers in vivo, emphasizing the potential of the method for drug delivery and cell therapy applications.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic progressive disease involving VCAM-1 overexpression. New PET radiopharmaceuticals MacroP and NAMP, based on VCAM-1 binding peptide, show high radiochemical purity and potential for early atheroma detection. NAMP also demonstrates higher radioactive uptake in vitro and may have future applications in theranostics.

The Pharmaceutical Technology Approach on Imaging Innovations from Italian Research

Giorgia Ailuno et al.

Summary: Many modern therapeutic approaches rely on precise diagnostic evidence, with imaging procedures playing a crucial role. Conventional imaging agents have limitations such as non-specificity, short imaging time, instability, and toxicity, highlighting the importance of developing new agents with higher selectivity and sensitivity. Pharmaceutical technology skills are highly essential in responding to the need for new diagnostic agents.
