Guosheng Yang et al.

Summary: The synthesis of dicyclic spiropyridazine oxoindole derivatives by [3+3]-cycloaddition reaction of N-unsubstituted isatin N,N'-cyclic azomethine imine 1,3-dipoles was successfully achieved. The products, having two consecutive stereocenters including spiroquaternary stereocenters in one ring structure, were obtained in moderate to excellent yields (20-93%) and low to moderate diastereoselectivities (1:9-10:1 dr). The synthesized compounds were thoroughly characterized using various spectroscopic techniques.

Synthesis of Acrylonitrile Derivatives via Visible Light-induced Coupling Reaction of Morita-Baylis-Hillman Adducts with Tertiary Amines and α-Trimethylsilyl Amines

Niannian Ni et al.

Summary: The Ru-catalyzed coupling reaction of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) adducts with tertiary amines and alpha-trimethylsilyl amines under visible light showed different chemical reaction characteristics when compared to MBH adducts with ester groups as withdrawing-electron groups. The universality of substrates has been extended, allowing for the synthesis of structurally complementary acrylonitriles in satisfied yields under mild conditions and providing an opportunity to discover new meaningful bioactive compounds.

Chada Raji Reddy et al.

Summary: An effective synthetic approach for the construction of diverse bicyclic fused cyclopentenones from Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates of propiolaldehydes has been demonstrated. The transformation involves the propargylation of an alkenylamine with an MBH carbonate followed by the Pauson-Khand reaction to yield cyclopentenone fused with aza-cycles having additional functionality.

Recent updates on the stereoselective synthesis of structurally functionalized spiro-oxindoles mediated by isatin N, N′ cyclic azomethine imine 1, 3-dipoles

Biplob Borah et al.

Summary: Spirooxindoles are commonly found in the basic skeletons of various natural alkaloids and therapeutically significant molecules. The development of synthetic methods for the construction of these compounds is challenging. Meanwhile, the utilization of isatin N, N'-cyclic azomethine imines in the synthesis of carbon-carbon and structurally functionalized heterocyclic compounds is still underdeveloped.

Organocatalytic (5+1) benzannulation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonates: synthesis of multisubstituted 4-benzylidene pyrazolones

Shurong He et al.

Summary: 4-Benzylidene pyrazolones are important organic synthesis compounds that can serve as scaffolds for bioactive molecules, building blocks, ligands, dyes, and pigments. This study presents a (5+1) benzannulation strategy for the practical synthesis of multisubstituted 4-benzylidene pyrazolones, utilizing an organocatalytic cycloaddition reaction and avoiding the need for a metal catalyst and large amounts of base or oxidant. The developed approach offers a green and efficient method for the construction of diverse and interesting derivatives.

Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of functionalized and fused heterocycles from Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts of dicyclopentadienone

Alati Suresh et al.

Summary: An efficient protocol for the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction of dicyclopentadienone using CTAB has been developed. The MBH adduct was subsequently transformed to its acetate and bromide derivatives. The 1,3-bielectrophilic character of the MBH acetate and bromide was further explored with various 1,3-binucleophiles to construct various oxa-, thia- and aza-heterocycles. These reactions proceed through a cascade double Michael addition of 1,3-binucleophiles to the MBH acetate/bromide under basic conditions. Amenability of these reactions to scale-up and applications of the products in the synthesis of cyclopentenone-fused chromenones and thiopyranoindoles have been demonstrated.
