Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

In vitro and in silico analysis of galanthine from Zephyranthes carinata as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase

Karina Sierra et al.

Summary: This study isolated and described the alkaloids of Zephyranthes carinata Herb., finding galanthine as the main component with significant inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase. Molecular dynamics analysis revealed that galanthine interacts with the peripheral anionic binding site of the enzyme, preventing the entrance and exit of molecules from the active site. This research provides important information for the search of new cholinesterase inhibitors by identifying unknown bio-interactions between bioactive compounds and biological targets.

The interplay between apoptosis and cellular senescence: Bcl-2 family proteins as targets for cancer therapy

Alakananda Basu

Summary: The interplay between apoptosis and senescence is crucial in cancer development, and targeting the Bcl-2 family proteins could be a promising strategy for cancer therapy. Therapy-induced senescence (TIS), induced by chemotherapeutic agents, has been controversial in its effect on therapeutic outcome. Clearance of senescent cells and overcoming their pro-survival mechanisms are important challenges in cancer treatment. This review article discusses recent literature on the role of the Bcl-2 family proteins in apoptosis and senescence, and the progress and limitations in targeting them for cancer therapy.

Current and future burden of breast cancer: Global statistics for 2020 and 2040

Melina Arnold et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with over 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. There is significant geographic variation in incidence rates, with lower rates in some Asian and African countries and higher rates in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Northern America, and parts of Europe. Mortality rates show less variation, but transitioning countries still bear a disproportionate burden of breast cancer deaths. By 2040, the burden of breast cancer is predicted to increase further due to population growth and ageing. Global efforts are needed to address this growing burden, especially in transitioning countries where incidence rates are rising rapidly and mortality rates remain high.
