Room-Temperature Cholesteric Liquid Crystals of Cellulose Derivatives with Visible Reflection

Yuki Ogiwara et al.

Summary: This study presents a promising strategy to control the reflection colors of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) derivatives at room temperature by introducing two kinds of alkanoyl groups with different lengths into the side chains. By chemically optimizing the side chain, room-temperature thermotropic cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) materials of HPC derivatives with visible reflection were successfully prepared. This research contributes to the development of versatile photonic applications by CLCs produced from biomass.

Polymer Crystallization with Configurable Birefringence in Double Emulsion Droplets

Baihui Li et al.

Summary: The crystallization behavior of double emulsion droplets formed by PBA, PCL, and their blends was studied. It was found that crystal growth drives spherical liquid droplets to anisotropic solid microcapsules with orientation-sensitive birefringence. The composition of two polymers can regulate the transition from PBA-dominated shell to PCL-dominated shell.

Birefringence of Thin Uniaxial Polymer Films Estimated Using the Light Polarization Ellipse

Mihai Postolache et al.

Summary: A simple method for determining the linear birefringence of thin layers is proposed, which is based on the determination of the orientation of the polarization ellipse of totally polarized light and applied to PVA thin foils. Theoretical notions and experimental procedure are described. The linear birefringence of polymer thin foils with different degrees of stretching is determined and the applicability of the method is discussed.

Compensation for Orientation Birefringence of PMMA by Blending Bottlebrush Polymers Composed of Well-Controlled Graft Chains

Masaki Tamura et al.

Summary: In this study, effective bottlebrush polymers were synthesized to achieve almost zero birefringence when mixed with optical PMMA. By blending different ratios of linear PMMA and PMMA-BBP and subjecting them to uniaxial drawing, the orientation birefringence of PMMA could be effectively controlled and removed.

Acoustically induced birefringence in polymer aqueous solutions: The case of polyvinyl alcohol

C. Kouderis et al.

Summary: The transient and stationary ultrasonically induced birefringence traces of various relatively dilute poly-vinyl alcohol aqueous solutions were measured and found to be proportional to the solution mass concentration, the square root of the ultrasonic intensity, and the frequency of the ultrasound. The analysis of transient birefringence signals provided information about the orientational relaxation times and was discussed in the context of recent experimental studies and theoretical predictions.

Photoinduced Molecular Reorientation of a Liquid Crystalline Polymer with a High Birefringence

Toshiki Nishizono et al.

Summary: A photoalignable liquid crystalline polymer with a Schiff-base end moiety was synthesized and investigated for its thermally stimulated photoinduced reorientation behavior using linearly polarized 365nm light. Significant in-plane reorientation, high birefringence, and thermal stability were achieved. The reoriented structure could be reversed by re-exposure to light, but could be recovered by re-annealing.

New Strategy for Inducing Surface Anisotropy in Polyimide Films for Nematics Orientation in Display Applications

Elena-Luiza Epure et al.

Summary: The orientation of liquid crystal displays is affected by the surface anisotropy created through a novel strategy of combining rubbing with cloth and stretching via pressing. The chemical structure of the polymer and order of surface treatment steps impact the orientation of chains, resulting in competitive factors affecting interactions with nematic liquid crystals and ultimately influencing the reliability and uniformity of display devices.

Effect of mechanical treatments on orientation behavior and spectral properties of azoderivative dyes incorporated in poly(vinyl alcohol) films

Raluca Marinica Albu et al.

Summary: Different azoderivative dyes were incorporated into uncolored poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH). The linear birefringence increased with stretching degree for both uncolored and colored films. Dichroism of the PVOH films depended on the dye chemical structure and stretching degree.

Strain-Induced Birefringence of Amorphous Polymers and Molecular Design of Optical Polymers

Tadashi Inoue

Summary: Orientational birefringence dominates in the rubbery region, while glassy birefringence contributes in the glassy region. Optimizing both contributions is essential to control strain-induced birefringence in optical resins. Copolymerization of a ternary system is effective in controlling the birefringence.
