Major Phytochemicals: Recent Advances in Health Benefits and Extraction Method

Ashwani Kumar et al.

Summary: Recent scientific studies have shown that consuming phytochemicals such as carotenoids, polyphenols, isoprenoids, phytosterols, saponins, dietary fibers, polysaccharides, etc., can offer health benefits including prevention of diabetes, obesity, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, etc. As a result, phytochemicals have gained popularity. Functional foods containing phytochemicals and concentrated forms of phytochemicals, known as nutraceuticals, are now used as preventive measures or treatments for various diseases. The purity and structural stability of these phytochemicals play a crucial role in their health benefits, which depend on factors such as matrix, extraction method, solvent, temperature, and extraction time.

Simultaneous Optimization of Extraction Yield, Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Moroccan Propolis Extracts: Improvement of Ultrasound-Assisted Technique Using Response Surface Methodology

Abderrazak Aboulghazi et al.

Summary: Propolis extraction conditions were optimized using ultrasound-assisted extraction method. The optimal conditions included a sonication time of 15 minutes, a solvent/propolis ratio of 30 mL/g, and an ethanol concentration of 40%. The extraction yield, total polyphenols, flavonoid contents, and antioxidant activity of the extract were evaluated and found to be in good agreement with the predicted values.
