Laccase: A potential biocatalyst for pollutant degradation*

Cheng-Di Dong et al.

Summary: In the process of urbanization, anthropogenic activities, industrialization, and economic growth have led to waste management problems, disposal issues, and the emergence of pollutants. To maintain a sustainable environment, bioremediation using microorganisms or enzymes is a promising solution. Laccase, an oxidoreductase enzyme produced by microorganisms, has shown great potential in degrading chemical pollutants. However, challenges such as immobilization and engineering of robust laccase need to be addressed for large-scale application in waste treatment and emerging pollutant degradation.

Characterization of a Recombinant Laccase B from Trametes hirsuta MX2 and Its Application for Decolorization of Dyes

Yitong Jia et al.

Summary: Trametes hirsuta secretes laccase isoenzymes, and an inducible laccase from this species was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris. The recombinant laccase showed optimal pH and temperature for the oxidation of ABTS, and its activity was influenced by metal ions and organic solvents. Furthermore, the laccase exhibited efficient decolorization ability for certain dyes, suggesting its potential application in dye removal from wastewater.

Decolourisation of textile dye by laccase: Process evaluation and assessment of its degradation bioproducts

Ashutosh Yadav et al.

Summary: The biodegradation of environmentally hazardous synthetic dyes by enzymes, particularly laccase derived from Arthrographis kalrae, has received significant attention in recent years. Through the Box-Behnken design approach, optimal dye decolourisation of Remazol Brilliant Blue R was achieved with a 97.18% efficiency. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and UV-Visible Spectrophotometry confirmed the biodegradation process, while extra Precision Glide docking revealed a strong binding affinity between laccase and RBBR complex.
