Surprising Use of the Business Innovation Bass Diffusion Model To Accurately Describe Adsorption Isotherm Types I, III, and V

Lukas W. Bingel et al.

Summary: In this study, an empirical two-parameter model based on the Bass model was proposed to accurately fit isotherm data of IUPAC types I, III, and V. This model can be used to qualitatively assess the hydrophilic or hydrophobic behavior of porous materials, and to find matching heats of adsorption values using continuous fit instead of partial, stepwise fits or interpolation.

Modelling of adsorbate-size dependent explicit isotherms using a segregated approach to account for surface heterogeneities

Shrinjay Sharma et al.

Summary: Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) is a common method for modeling mixture adsorption isotherms, while the segregated version (SIAST) provides improved adsorbed loadings. We have adopted the concept of SIAST and developed the Segregated Explicit Isotherm (SEI) model which considers both size-effects of co-adsorbed molecules and surface heterogeneities. Compared to IAST and SIAST, SEI does not require an iterative scheme, resulting in faster simulations with excellent agreement with experimental data.

Comprehensive Assessment of the Accuracy of the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory for Predicting Binary Adsorption of Gas Mixtures in Porous Materials

Farhad Gharagheizi et al.

Summary: This paper systematically evaluates the accuracy of the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for gas adsorption using a large collection of binary experimental data, which will be valuable for future efforts to test or develop mixing theories that improve upon FAST. This analysis includes data from 63 gas mixtures of 37 different molecular species and 174 different adsorbents, making it the most systematic evaluation to date of the accuracy of IAST for gas adsorption.

Grey Wolf Optimization algorithm based on Cauchy-Gaussian mutation and improved search strategy

Kewen Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Grey Wolf Optimization algorithm based on Cauchy-Gaussian mutation and improved search strategy (CG-GWO) was proposed to address the slow convergence speed and tendency to fall into local optimal solution issues of the traditional Grey Wolf Optimization algorithm (GWO). The experimental results showed that the CG-GWO algorithm outperforms other classic optimization algorithms and improved algorithms in terms of convergence accuracy, convergence speed, and global search ability.

Adsorption Size Effects for Langmuir Systems in Process Simulators: Case Study Comparing Explicit Langmuir-Based Models and FASTIAS

Tom R. C. Van Assche et al.

Summary: Adsorption processes are typically designed using process simulators, with the extended Langmuir model commonly used to capture competition effects while not accounting for adsorbate size effects. This study aims to introduce new models to address adsorbate size effects and compare their predictions to the implicit ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) in a process simulator case study. The results suggest that explicit models may offer quicker execution and potentially improve predictions compared to IAST, but implementation in the process simulator is crucial.

Deep learning combined with IAST to screen thermodynamically feasible MOFs for adsorption-based separation of multiple binary mixtures

Ryther Anderson et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks can be tuned to create reproducible adsorption properties for non-thermal separations in fixed-adsorption beds, but the challenge lies in finding the best MOF for separating a given mixture from millions of possible structures. Computational screening is necessary to identify promising MOF structures, and an alternative framework using a multipurpose MLP model coupled with IAST has been developed to efficiently identify high-performing MOFs for various gas mixtures at different conditions.

How Reliable Is the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory for the Estimation of Mixture Separation Selectivities in Microporous Crystalline Adsorbents?

Rajamani Krishna et al.

Summary: Microporous crystalline adsorbents like zeolites and MOFs have potential applications in various separation processes. The adsorption selectivity S-ads is a key metric used to quantify the effectiveness of these adsorbents in mixture separations. The Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) is commonly used to estimate S-ads, but may fail in certain scenarios due to inhomogeneous distribution of adsorbates or thermodynamic non-idealities.
