Genetic diversity and phylogeographic patterns of the dioecious palm Chamaedorea tepejilote (Arecaceae) in Costa Rica: the role of mountain ranges and possible refugia

Eric J. Fuchs et al.

Summary: Gene flow is necessary for maintaining effective population sizes and genetic diversity. This study used SSR and cpDNA markers to investigate the genetic diversity and structure of C. tepejilote populations in Costa Rica. High-elevation mountain ranges act as a barrier for gene flow between Caribbean and Pacific slopes, while low-elevation passes are permeable. Gene flow between Pacific and Caribbean populations may have occurred through the Talamanca Mountain range in Panama. This study sheds light on the gene flow and dispersal patterns of C. tepejilote in Costa Rica and highlights the importance of mountain ranges in shaping gene flow patterns of Neotropical plants.

Displaced clines in an avian hybrid zone (Thamnophilidae: Rhegmatorhina) within an Amazonian interfluve

Glaucia Del-Rio et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation of hybrid zones between two obligate army-ant-followers, the White-breasted Antbird and the Harlequin Antbird, in the Amazon Basin. Major geographic displacement between mitochondrial and nuclear clines was observed, with potential causes including sampling error, genetic drift, and asymmetric cytonuclear incompatibilities. Data indicates expansion and unidirectional introgression of one species into the distribution of the other.

Hybridization and the Coexistence of Species

Darren Irwin et al.

Summary: This study simulated the coexistence outcomes of two sympatric species that are ecologically differentiated but have incomplete reproductive isolation. The study found that the fitness of hybrid offspring plays a crucial role in species coexistence. High hybrid fitness can lead to species collapse into one, while low hybrid fitness can cause population declines and increase the risk of species extinction. High intrinsic growth rates can reduce the probability of extinction and increase the likelihood of stable coexistence at moderate levels of assortative mating and hybrid fitness. Very strong but incomplete assortative mating can induce low hybrid fitness via a mating disadvantage to rare genotypes, stabilizing the coexistence of two species at high but incomplete levels of assortative mating.

Revisiting a classic hybrid zone: Movement of the northern flicker hybrid zone in contemporary times

Stepfanie M. Aguillon et al.

Summary: By studying the hybrid zone between yellow-shafted and red-shafted flickers in the Great Plains over a long period, it was found that the center of the hybrid zone shifted westward while its width remained unchanged. The research indicates that the hybrid zone remains narrow, suggesting the presence of some kind of selective pressure maintaining the area.

Population genomics of an emergent tri-species hybrid zone

Summary: This study investigates a hybrid zone involving three species of woodpeckers and finds that hybridization is more extensive than in two-species hybrid zones. However, there is no evidence of hybrid swarms, indicating selection against hybrids may contribute to maintaining species boundaries.

Population genomics and sexual signals support reproductive character displacement in Uperoleia (Anura: Myobatrachidae) in a contact zone

Frederick R. Jaya et al.

Summary: When closely related species come into contact via range expansion, selection favors minimizing costly interspecies reproductive interactions. In a study on a toadlet species complex from northern Australia, population genomic data revealed the geographic origin and secondary contact, providing evidence for reproductive character displacement following range expansion.

Rapid diversification of the Variable Seedeater superspecies complex despite widespread gene flow

Diego Ocampo et al.

Summary: This study used a phylogenomic approach to investigate the evolutionary history and genetic structure of the Variable Seedeater superspecies complex. The findings suggest that the early diversification of this complex occurred rapidly despite historical gene flow, and plumage color divergence may influence the extent of gene flow among populations.

Signatures of selection in a recent invasion reveal adaptive divergence in a highly vagile invasive species

Katarina C. Stuart et al.

Summary: A study on invasive common starlings in Australia revealed genetic differentiation and responses to selective pressures, with isolation by distance playing a significant role in genetic substructure. Factors such as aridity, precipitation, and temperature were found to potentially drive adaptive variation in the starling's invasive range. Historical introduction regimes may impact sites under adaptive selection, highlighting the importance of critical interpretation of selection analyses in non-native populations.

Comparative phylogeographic and demographic analyses reveal a congruent pattern of sister relationships between bird populations of the northern and south-central Atlantic Forest

Fernanda Bocalini et al.

Summary: The Pernambuco Center of Endemism (PCE) is a northern strip of the Atlantic Forest, where genetic diversity is influenced by ecological factors and historical processes. Population splits within the PCE occurred during the Mid-Pleistocene, with closer relations to southern-central Atlantic Forest populations than those in Amazonia. The study supports the role of Pleistocene refugium in shaping current genetic diversity in the PCE, while also highlighting connections with Amazonia in assembling the PCE avifauna through migration events.

Two new hybrid populations expand the swordtail hybridization model system

Daniel L. Powell et al.

Summary: The study revealed that hybrid populations formed between the northern swordtail fish Xiphophorus cortezi and Xiphophorus birchmanni consist of a cluster of pure X. birchmanni individuals and one of phenotypically intermediate hybrids. Simulations suggest that initial hybridization occurred approximately 150 generations ago at both sites, with little evidence for contemporary gene flow between subpopulations.

Distinguishing genomic homogenization from parapatric speciation in an elevationally replacing pair of Ramphocelus tanagers

Vanessa Luzuriaga-Aveiga et al.

Summary: In this study, coalescent modelling was used to analyze two weakly diverged species of elevationally replacing Ramphocelus tanagers. The results showed that while the majority of the genome has fused due to high gene flow, select loci associated with plumage color remain divergent, maintaining geographical color differences between the incipient species.
