Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Fe(II) Complexes Designed for Solar-Energy Conversion: Current Status and Open Questions

Cristina Cebrian et al.

Summary: One major challenge in future sustainable photochemistry is to replace precious and rare transition metals with earth-abundant, cheap, and recyclable materials, such as coordination complexes of first row transition metals like Cu, Cr, or Mn, in applications like energy conversion or electroluminescence. Recently, the fundamental limitations of using iron, which is attractive due to its natural abundance, have been overcome. This review article summarizes the current understanding of the structure-property relationships of Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes with nanosecond range excited state lifetimes, while focusing on the potential insights provided by the less explored ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy to differentiate ligand- vs. metal-centered states.

Dynamics of Spin Crossover Molecular Complexes

Thilini K. Ekanayaka et al.

Summary: The understanding of the time scale and mechanisms associated with spin state changes in transition metal-based spin crossover (SCO) molecular complexes is reviewed. Most time resolved experiments are carried out using optical techniques, revealing the complex interplay of factors influencing the optically driven spin state transition. Size reduction to the nanoscale is essential for designing SCO systems with fast switching capabilities, making nano-sized SCO systems key for device applications where write speed is crucial.

Spin-state-dependent electrical conductivity in single-walled carbon nanotubes encapsulating spin-crossover molecules

Julia Villalva et al.

Summary: Encapsulating robust Fe-based SCO molecules within the 1D cavities of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) can endure encapsulation and positioning of individual heterostructures in nanoscale transistors, triggering a large conductance bistability and providing a backbone for readout and positioning of SCO molecules into nanodevices, as well as helping to tune their magnetic properties at the nanoscale. Spin-crossover molecules are ideal sensors due to their ability to change spin-state under various stimuli, but typically face limitations such as insulating and unstable properties, which can be overcome through encapsulation inside carbon nanotubes.

Ultra-high Seebeck coefficient of a thermal sensor through entropic optimisation of ligand length of Fe(ii) spin-crossover (SCO) materials

Hazirah Che Hassan et al.

Summary: This study achieved ultrahigh Seebeck coefficients through molecular optimization strategies, with a six-pronged approach to maximize entropy during the transition from low spin to high spin. Additionally, the paper systematically identifies contributing factors for energy harvesting through the optimization of molecular entropy elements.

Synthesis and size-dependent spin crossover of coordination polymer [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4)

Shiraz Ahmed Siddiqui et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of single crystals of iron-triazole coordination polymer and finds that the thermal spin crossover of the crystals depends largely on crystal size. Fine crystals are suitable for depositing thin films that exhibit redox activity, while the largest crystals allow reliable electrical conductance measurements.
