dbPTM in 2022: an updated database for exploring regulatory networks and functional associations of protein post-translational modifications

Zhongyan Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents an update of dbPTM with over 2,777,000 PTM substrate sites, of which more than 2,235,000 entries are experimentally verified. The update includes 42 new modification types and collates regulatory information from databases into a protein-protein interaction network, shedding light on the association between PTMs and molecular functions.

Vitamin A in health care: Suppression of growth and induction of differentiation in cancer cells by vitamin A and its derivatives and their mechanisms of action

Noriko Takahashi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the circulation of vitamin A in the body, the actions and mechanisms of retinal and RA, retinoylation as an RA mechanism independent of RA receptors, the relationship between cancer and the actions of retinol or beta-carotene, and the anti-cancer actions of vitamin A derivatives derived from fenretinide. The study suggests that nutritional management of vitamin A is effective in cancer prevention.

PROST: AlphaFold2-aware Sequence-Based Predictor to Estimate Protein Stability Changes upon Missense Mutations

Shahid Iqbal et al.

Summary: PROST is a sequence-based predictor for protein stability changes caused by single-point missense mutations. It utilizes various sequence-based features, physicochemical properties, evolutionary information, and predicted structural features to accurately predict the protein stability changes. The performance of PROST is evaluated on multiple datasets and compared with state-of-the-art predictors, demonstrating its superiority.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

An Investigation of the Role of Common and Rare Variants in a Large Italian Multiplex Family of Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Nadia Barizzone et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of rare functional variants in an Italian MS multiplex family and found a significant burden of common variants among affected family members. Shared low-frequency functional variants in genes related to specific biological processes or neurodegenerative diseases were identified, suggesting a possible pathogenic role in MS. The rare variants, combined with known common MS variants, may contribute to the high number of affected family members in this MS multiplex family.
