Detection of megalocytivirus in Oreochromis niloticus and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans in Brazil

Antonio Augusto Fonseca Jr et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed suspected foci of Megalocytivirus (MCV) infection in freshwater fish in Brazil. Results revealed two circulating groups of MCV in Brazil, with one group forming a clade related to ISKNV samples worldwide. Additionally, two sequences from the state of Goias showed a small genetic distance compared to the larger group in the same clade. The study also validated three qPCR methods and described the presence of MCV in Brazil since 2017, including a previously undescribed genotype.

First report of the infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) infection in ornamental fishes in India

S. K. Girisha et al.

Summary: The first report of Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) infection in India is documented, showing a high sequence similarity with documented isolates from different countries. The study suggests a potential high risk of spread of ISKNV in ornamental fish populations in India. Proper biosecurity measures are essential to control the emerging pathogens.

Molecular evidence for homologous strains of infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) genotype I infecting inland freshwater cultured Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) in Thailand

Pattarawit Kerddee et al.

Summary: Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) infects grown-out Asian sea bass in inland freshwater systems in Thailand, belonging to the ISKNV genotype I clade. Confirmation through semi-nested PCR and Koch's postulates were achieved, highlighting the importance of ISKNV genotype I for future vaccine research.

Complete genome sequences of infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus isolated from farmed albino rainbow sharks Epalzeorhynchos frenatum in the United States

Samantha A. Koda et al.

Summary: The study reports the complete genome sequences of two megalocytiviruses isolated from diseased albino rainbow sharks reared on farms in the United States in 2018 and 2019, confirming the presence of ISKNV in albino rainbow sharks for the first time. Phylogenomic analyses revealed that both EFIV isolates belong to the ISKNV genotype within the genus Megalocytivirus.
