Low-temperature heat transfer mediums for cryogenic applications

Hussam Jouhara et al.

Summary: Researchers and industrialists are interested in cryogenic technologies due to the unique properties of materials at very low temperatures. This work discusses the recent progress and characteristics of cryogenic mediums in heat transfer applications. Liquid He and N2 are the most commonly used cryogenic mediums, with liquid He providing extremely low temperatures and liquid N2 being cost-effective and easily accessible. The single-phase application of cryogenic mediums is common, while two-phase applications are mainly seen in heat pipes. Cryogenic mediums are crucial for critical and niche applications in aerospace, superconductivity, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and scientific research.

Xanthan gum based investigations into the surface chemistry of cassiterite and beneficiation of cassiterite tailings

C. Nambaje et al.

Summary: This study investigated the surface chemistry and selective dispersion-flocculation-flotation of cassiterite tailings using xanthan gum. The results showed that xanthan gum adsorbs on cassiterite through both physical and chemical forces. The adsorption density decreases with increasing pH, and does not occur on quartz. The adsorption of xanthan gum on cassiterite is governed by hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction. Selective dispersion-flocculation-flotation tests demonstrated that a cleaner concentrate of high grade and recovery could be obtained using xanthan gum.

Summary: A novel collector, EDDA, was synthesized and used in the reverse froth flotation of limonite and quartz. The results showed that EDDA had good floatation ability and selectivity to quartz, and it was more effective than the commonly used DDA. The high-efficiency separation of limonite and quartz could be achieved without adding depressant by using EDDA at the natural pH range.

Helping to reduce mining industry carbon emissions: A step-by-step guide to sizing and selection of energy efficient high pressure grinding rolls circuits

Stephen Morrell

Summary: Comminution significantly contributes to the Mining Industry's carbon footprint, and there is a need to improve comminution circuit energy efficiency in order to meet net zero carbon emission targets. High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) circuits have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by a considerable amount compared to traditional alternatives. However, the adoption of HPGR technology has been slow, possibly due to the costly and time-consuming pilot testing required. To address this issue, a power-based methodology has been developed to assess, size, and select HPGR closed circuits in hard rock mining applications.

Dual Nickel/Photoredox-Catalyzed Site-Selective Cross-Coupling of 1,2-Bis-Boronic Esters Enabled by 1,2-Boron Shifts

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports a nickel/photoredox-catalyzed site-selective mono-deboronative arylation of 1,2-bis-boronic esters, which allows for selective coupling of the more sterically hindered secondary/tertiary positions. This is achieved by utilizing a 1,2-boron shift of primary β-boryl radicals to the thermodynamically favored secondary/tertiary radicals for arylation. The mild conditions of this method are suitable for a wide range of aryl halides, resulting in good yields and high regioselectivity. Additionally, this method allows for stereodivergent coupling of cyclic cis-1,2-bis-boronic esters to give trans-substituted products.

Adsorption of Sodium of Polyaspartic Acid on Serpentine and Its Effects on Selective Pyrite/Serpentine Flotation

Xihui Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, sodium of polyaspartic acid (PASP) was used as a selective depressant to achieve the selective flotation of pyrite from serpentine. The addition of PASP rendered the surface charge of serpentine negative, breaking the hetero-coagulation between serpentine and pyrite. This resulted in the successful recovery of pyrite from serpentine.

Investigations into the flotation of molybdenite in the presence of chalcopyrite using (3S,4S,5S,6R)-3,4,5,6-tetrahydroxyoxane-2-carboxylate acid as a novel selective depressant: An experimental and theoretical perspective

Levie Mweene et al.

Summary: The experimental and theoretical investigation of (3S,4S,5S,6R)-3,4,5,6-tetrahydroxyoxane-2-carboxylate (TTC) acid as a chalcopyrite (CPY) depressant during molybdenite-chalcopyrite (MLT-CPY) beneficiation was conducted. The adsorption of TTC onto CPY was found to be higher than onto MLT. The most stable complexes on MLT and CPY were Mo(OH)-4 center dot center dot center dot FeOH+center dot center dot center dot TTC (S = 1) and FeOH+center dot center dot center dot TTC (S = 0) complexes, respectively. The complexes were governed by traditional hydrogen bonding, as well as covalent and other non-covalent interactions. Flotation tests using an economical TTC depressant yielded satisfactory grade, recovery, and separation efficiency for the synthetic mixture of MLT and CPY.

Experimental and theoretical investigation on the separation of chalcopyrite from biotite using xanthan gum as a selective depressant

The adsorption of xanthan gum on chalcopyrite and biotite is pH-dependent, with a chemisorption process observed on both minerals. Analysis using QTAIM and NCI tools indicated that the adsorption of xanthan gum is governed by weak, partial covalent hydrogen bonding and other non-covalent interactions on both chalcopyrite and biotite.

Studies on the selective flotation of pyrite from fine serpentine by using citric acid as depressant

Dezhi Liu et al.

Summary: The study showed that citric acid effectively alleviated the depression effect of serpentine on pyrite flotation by adsorbing on the serpentine surface and accelerating the dissolution of magnesium cations. This led to a change in surface charge of serpentine, breaking the hetero-coagulation between serpentine and pyrite and restoring the floatability of pyrite. Based on these findings, citric acid could potentially serve as an effective depressant in the flotation separation of sulfide ore from serpentine.
