A novel microfluidic device for double emulsion formation: The effects of design parameters on droplet production performance

Reza Yousofvand et al.

Summary: This study conducted a parametric research on the effects of characteristic design parameters on droplet generation using Lattice Boltzmann Method, designed a new one-step model based on the coflowing concept, and determined the influential geometrical factors. Each factor was further optimized individually, providing a better outlook for future research and manufacturing.

An approach for the scalable production of macroporous polymer beads

Juan Ferrer et al.

Summary: A tubular co-flow reactor was developed for the production of macroporous polymer beads through polymerization of medium and high internal phase emulsion (M/HIPE) templates. Compared to tubing based microfluidic devices, this reactor allows for improved production rates. Water-in-oil (W/O) M/HIPEs with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) monomers were injected into a re-circulating carrier phase and UV polymerized in situ, resulting in polyM/HIPE beads with a protective crust and interconnected internal pore structure. HCl loaded beads were also produced with good encapsulation efficiencies.

One-Step microfluidic synthesis of spherical and bullet-like alginate microcapsules with a core-shell structure

Liyun Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel and facile method for generating spherical and non-spherical alginate microcapsules by controlling parameters such as flow rates. The release performance of the microcapsules was investigated using alpha-tocopherol as a model drug, showing differences in release rates and core behavior between spherical and bullet-like microcapsules.

Rapid, Simple, and Inexpensive Spatial Patterning of Wettability in Microfluidic Devices for Double Emulsion Generation

Hangrui Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a rapid, simple, and inexpensive method for spatially patterning wettability in microfluidic devices to continuously generate monodisperse DEs and successfully generate gelatin microgels. The biological capability of the generated DEs in encapsulating and supporting the growth of yeast cells is demonstrated through flow cytometric screening.

Microfluidics for core-shell drug carrier particles - a review

Sepideh Yazdian Kashani et al.

Summary: Core-shell drug-carrier particles combine unique properties of core and shell, designed for controlled drug release and minimizing side effects. Generation of these particles using microfluidic techniques allows for consistent shape and size at lower cost, with advantages of integration capability, reproducibility, and efficiency. This approach demonstrates positive outlook for generating core-shell drug carrier particles.
