Allometric releases of nitrogen and phosphorus from sediments mediated by bacteria determines water eutrophication in coastal river basins of Bohai Bay

Jiayuan Liu et al.

Summary: Despite efforts by the Chinese government to reduce land-based pollutant discharge, eutrophication remains a common problem in rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters. This study investigates the mechanisms of eutrophication in the Duliujian River Basin of Bohai Bay. The results suggest that sediment is a major source of nitrogen and phosphorus, and controlling both nutrients is necessary to control water eutrophication in coastal river basins.

Spatiotemporal variation in nitrogen and phosphorus levels and microbial community in the upstream water transport channel to the Douhe Reservoir

Yueting Fan et al.

Summary: The Douhe Reservoir is an important water source for Tianjin and Tangshan cities, but the excessive concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus has posed a threat to the water quality. This study investigates the distribution characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in different seasons and areas of the reservoir, as well as the microbial community structure. The results provide important theoretical support for future risk prevention and control of nutrient elements in the LuanHe River basin, ultimately improving the drinking water safety for residents in Tianjin and Tangshan.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial communities in five landscape lakes replenished by reclaimed water and analyzed the factors driving the dominant microbial species. The results showed that the diversity of microbial communities was higher in June and July and that temperature, total nitrogen, and phosphorus were the main drivers. Various potential bacterial pathogens were identified, some of which had significant health effects. The study provides insight into the dynamics of microbial communities and health concerns in landscape lakes with reclaimed water.

Urbanization drives the succession of antibiotic resistome and microbiome in a river watershed

Longji Zhu et al.

Summary: Urbanization alters antibiotic resistome and microbiome in water and sediments, with water showing increasing relative abundance of ARGs and bacterial diversity along urbanization, while sediments remain relatively stable. Water in urban regions poses higher potential environmental risk of antibiotic resistance, while sediments in rural and peri-urban regions exhibit lower risk.

Distribution of sediment microbial communities and their relationship with surrounding environmental factors in a typical rural river, Southwest China

Cheng Yang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the relationship between characteristics of sediment microbial communities and surrounding environmental factors in a typical rural river using 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology. The results showed that different areas of the river had specific dominant bacteria due to different sources of pollution. Environmental factors such as ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids significantly affected the bacterial community in the sediment, with functions mainly related to metabolism for degrading organic matter and removing pollutants.

Contrasting assembly mechanisms explain the biogeographic patterns of benthic bacterial and fungal communities on the Tibetan Plateau

Baohui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biogeographic patterns and assembly mechanisms of benthic bacterial and fungal communities on the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed contrasting distance-decay relationships between these communities, with bacterial communities being influenced by deterministic processes and fungal communities showing more stochastic assembly. pH was found to be a dominant factor in influencing the geographic distribution of benthic microbial communities. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed higher complexity and greater stability in bacterial communities compared to fungal communities.

J. E. Ruprecht et al.

Summary: This study used a novel combination of microbial ecotoxicology methods to investigate the effects of wastewater pollution on bacterial community structure and function. Wastewater effluents above moderate concentrations led to significant shifts in bacterial community structure and function, primarily driven by two globally relevant bacterial indicator taxa, Malikia spp. and hgcI_clade. These findings have immediate implications for both the management of environmental stressors and protection of aquatic ecosystems.
