Antibiotic-Induced Changes in Pigment Accumulation, Photosystem II, and Membrane Permeability in a Model Cyanobacterium

Yavuz S. Yalcin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of antibiotics on Fremyella diplosiphon, a cyanobacterium well-known for its photosynthesis capabilities. The results show that optimal concentrations of kanamycin and tetracycline can enhance cellular growth and pigment accumulation, while high concentrations of kanamycin and cefotaxime have a detrimental effect. Additionally, ampicillin treatment significantly enhances pigment fluorescence. Future studies aim to enhance cellular lipid productivity for clean bioenergy applications.

The role of antioxidants in improving biodiesel's oxidative stability, poor cold flow properties, and the effects of the duo on engine performance: A review

Nurul Aini Amran et al.

Summary: Global competitiveness depends on meeting energy demand and addressing environmental issues. Biomass energy, particularly biodiesel, is considered an attractive substitute for fossil fuels. However, biodiesel has poor cold flow and oxidation stability, which can be improved by using antioxidants. This review discusses the factors affecting biodiesel's cold flow and oxidation stability, as well as the inhibitory functions of antioxidants.

Screening and characterization of polyhydroxyalkanoate granules, and phylogenetic analysis of polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase gene PhaC in cyanobacteria

Karl Hong et al.

Summary: In this study, 20 cyanobacterial strains were screened for the accumulation of carbon storage granules using Nile Red and BODIPY 493/503 dye-staining and fluorescence microscopy. Six strains were found to have dye-staining granules, with 4 strains confirmed to produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) granules through gene analysis. Horizontal gene transfer was observed between distant genera, shedding light on the evolutionary history of PHA biosynthesis in Cyanobacteria.
