Biodegradation of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate by novel Rhodococcus sp. PFS1 strain isolated from paddy field soil

Yoganathan Kamaraj et al.

Summary: In this study, a soil bacterium named Rhodococcus sp. PFS1 was isolated from paddy field soil and its ability to degrade DEHP under different environmental conditions was evaluated. The results showed that the strain PFS1 effectively degraded DEHP at neutral pH and 30 degrees C and exhibited excellent degradation at high salt concentration. Moreover, it efficiently degraded different types of phthalate esters (PAEs) and reduced DEHP contamination in soil.

Phthalate hydrolase: distribution, diversity and molecular evolution

Mousumi Bhattacharyya et al.

Summary: The alpha/beta-fold superfamily of hydrolases is one of the largest groups of structurally related enzymes with diverse catalytic functions. Esterases, particularly phthalate hydrolases, play a crucial role in the metabolism of estrogenic phthalic acid esters. Despite variations in sequence and function, these hydrolases share a common acid-base-nucleophile catalytic mechanism for reactions on different substrates. The review provides insights on phthalate hydrolases, including sources, structural diversities, phylogenetic affiliations, and types of enzymes capable of hydrolysing specific phthalate compounds.

Microplastics: A major source of phthalate esters in aquatic environments

Yaru Cao et al.

Summary: Phthalate esters (PAEs), commonly used additives in plastics, have raised global concern due to their widespread contamination in aquatic environments. This study investigated the release behaviors of PAEs from different types of plastic products, finding that the leaching potentials were plastic type-specific. The highest concentrations of PAEs were released from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pencil case, while the lowest amounts were released from polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and shampoo bottle.

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: Phthalates are commonly used in plastic products and can enter the environment, leading to potential toxicity in aquatic animals. Exposure to Phthalates can activate detoxification and endocrine systems in aquatic animals, causing oxidative stress and metabolic disorders. In addition, combined pollution of Phthalates with other chemicals may result in altered toxicity effects in different directions.

Genomic molecular signatures determined characterization of Mycolicibacterium gossypii sp. nov., a fast-growing mycobacterial species isolated from cotton field soil

Rui-Rui Huang et al.

Summary: A Gram-positive, acid-fast and rapidly growing rod strain, designated as S2-37(T), was isolated from a soil sample collected in a cotton cropping field in Xinjiang, China. Genomic analyses revealed the presence of T7SS secretion system and the potential to produce mycolic acid in strain S2-37(T), indicating its close relationship to the genus Mycolicibacterium. Phylogenetic analyses and molecular signature characterization supported the proposal of a novel species, Mycolicibacterium gossypii sp. nov., with the type strain S2-37(T).

Integrated Multi-omics Investigations Reveal the Key Role of Synergistic Microbial Networks in Removing Plasticizer Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate from Estuarine Sediments

Sean Ting-Shyang Wei et al.

Summary: DEHP, the most widely used plasticizer globally, accumulates in estuarine sediments and poses adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Through integrated meta-omics approaches, it was found that DEHP biodegradation in estuarine sediments mainly depends on synergistic networks between denitrifying proteobacteria. The side chain hydrolysis of DEHP is identified as the rate-limiting step in its degradation process.
