Promiscuous activity of β-carotene hydroxylase CrtZ on epoxycarotenoids leads to the formation of rare carotenoids with 6-hydroxy-3-keto-ε-ends

Maiko Furubayashi et al.

Summary: This study serendipitously discovered that the promiscuous activity of beta-carotene hydroxylase CrtZ can catalyze the formation of carotenoids with rare end groups. The findings provide further understanding of the reaction mechanism of diiron-containing beta-carotene hydroxylases and the biosynthesis of related compounds.

Morphological and Metabolic Engineering of Yarrowia lipolytica to Increase β-Carotene Production

Mengmeng Liu et al.

Summary: Yarrowia lipolytica is an environmentally friendly cell factory for beta-carotene production, but its dimorphic nature and stress-induced transition from yeast to mycelium can hinder industrial fermentation. By integrating multiple genes and morphological engineering through gene deletion, beta-carotene production in Y. lipolytica was significantly increased. This study achieved the highest reported titer and content of beta-carotene, showcasing the potential of morphological engineering for enhancing chemical synthesis in dimorphic yeasts.

Plant Carotenoids as Pigment Sources in Laying Hen Diets: Effect on Yolk Color, Carotenoid Content, Oxidative Stability and Sensory Properties of Eggs

Kristina Kljak et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of supplementing hen diets with dried basil herb, flowers of calendula and dandelion on the color, carotenoid content, oxidative stability, and sensory properties of egg yolk. Despite not reaching the levels of the control or marigold flower, the supplementation of these plants showed a positive impact on antioxidant properties of the yolks.

Violaxanthin: natural function and occurrence, biosynthesis, and heterologous production

Miho Takemura et al.

Summary: Violaxanthin is biosynthesized from zeaxanthin through the xanthophyll cycle in photosynthetic eukaryotes to eliminate excessive light energy. However, commercial availability of violaxanthin and antheraxanthin is limited due to lack of efficient resource plants or organisms for their production.
