Adaptive laboratory evolution in S. cerevisiae highlights role of transcription factors in fungal xenobiotic resistance

Sabine Ottilie et al.

Summary: Ottilie et al. used an experimental evolution approach to investigate the role of transcription factors in yeast chemical resistance. They found that most emergent mutations in resistant strains were enriched in transcription factor coding genes, highlighting their importance in drug resistance. Through in vitro evolution and whole genome analysis, they comprehensively identified the genetic determinants of chemical resistance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This work emphasizes the important role of transcription factors in the evolution of antifungal xenobiotic resistance and poses challenges to the development of effective antifungal treatments.

Bioconversion of ferulic acid into aroma compounds by newly isolated yeast strains of the Latin American biodiversity

Giulia Bettio et al.

Summary: Nine yeast strains isolated from Latin American biodiversity were evaluated for ferulic acid (FA) utilization and conversion into aroma compounds. The influence of pH on bioconversion was found significant, with acidic conditions enhancing vanillic acid (VA) accumulation. A two-step process favored 4-vinylguaiacol (VG) production, with strains showing varied productivity under different pH levels. Yeast strain R. mucilaginosa UFMG-CM-Y3647 was selected for scaled-up cultivations, achieving improved VA productivity under controlled pH and aeration conditions.

Whole-Cell Biosensors Aid Exploration of Vanillin Transmembrane Transport

Xuanxuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Transcriptional regulatory protein (TRP)-based whole-cell biosensors have shown great potential in screening cell efflux and influx pumps for small molecules, enabling rapid detection of genome targets related to small-molecule transmembrane transport, which is crucial in metabolic engineering.

Proteomic analysis revealed the roles of YRR1 deletion in enhancing the vanillin resistance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Wenyan Cao et al.

Summary: Vanillin is an important phenolic inhibitor in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, inhibiting the translation process. Deletion of YRR1 enhances vanillin resistance by promoting translation-related processes. Proteomic changes induced by vanillin stress and YRR1 deletion provide insights into yeast's protective response to vanillin.
